This development was explained to one of the Covenant crew according to his description.
He also uploaded a shot from the movie that had humanoid "servants" serving David(so the planet is not populated just by David and Walter) but I also saw this in a trailer, so perhaps nothing new.

You can even see their face and I could not determine whether they are human or engineer type(or maybe android?), but they were not tall. I will provide the link if no one can find the footage.

Though whether the 2 females are human/humanoid/etc. is not certain.
