To celebrate the upcoming release of Alien Covenant,I would like to take a look back at its predecessor Prometheus. To say the movie has a mixed reception among fans would be an understatement.Where do you stand on the film? What would you have done differently? What do you hope Covenant rectify's?

IMDB has it at 7/10

Rotten Tomatoes is 72%.

Which says to me, good but not brilliant.  Which is about right.

Agreed. It's the third highest rated Alien film although it's not technically one.

In my opinion it's not overrated, it's not underrated it's just kind of blah. Too many things to list that I would have done differently, probably change the whole script. I hope at least some questions get answered in Alien: Covenant that were left unanswered in the previous film, I know they won't tackle them all and they shouldn't yet but hopefully a few get answered. In a previous thread you did I just really wanna know what the fuck is really going on with David.

Loved it. But it has it's flaws.....so I think 72-80% is just right.

Like Blade Runner, it'll take time to digest. Probably another 20 years of retrospect....then nostalgia will kick in and give it another boost in the rankings.

Oh... and I like watching it in B/W with motion blur and spatial blur(VLC player)...gives it a very gritty look and feel.

I think over the place few years it has already gained a decent amount of respect.Of course not every body likes it and that's just fine.

I don't really think it's anything special, but I haven't been inclined to watch it in a few years.

It kind of comes across as pretentious.

I love Prometheus. I loved seeing the Engineers for the first time. I loved bridging the gap of were the first ship in Alien came from. For me this movie opened up so many possibilities about how many different weapons they were testing. I loved how Waylend told David to infect Halloway to see what the black goo would do to Halloway , such as maybe make him stronger. Since that's way Peter came with them to find out if he could gain more life , but Halloway got sick . So David had to wake the Engineer up to ask him face to face about giving more life to Peter but the Engineer was mad at this request and killed everyone.

I could go on and on but the bottom line is I loved Prometheus and watch it all the time for any information i missed.

I too love Prometheus.Looking back at it,it has it's fair share of flaws i initially overlooked(scientists doing dumb things etc.)But i still love it.I rank it 3rd after Aliens and Alien.

ill have to check it out but yea, the Predalien was a crazy idea with it putting chest bursters in pregnant women was insane and it made my female friends odd saying they would not want to imagine what having you child being eaten and then bursting out of your stomach while you're still alive would feel like.

off topic but yea he was only there to stop the outbreak, he went there pretty much knowing he was going to die but he did kill the queen before the nuke/bomb hit them. His helmet said something along the line of : No for the hunt , Not for the Honor but to clean up the mess the other Predators made.

The ratings are what they are. David stole the show while Shaw and almost everyone else ruined it. I watch it almost once a year to see if I might like it more but I like it less after each viewing- except for David.

ninXeno426

MemberPraetorianFeb-11-2017 7:59 PM

That's all good dk.David is by far my favorite part.As I've said, over the years I've recognized a lot on issues with Prometheus, but i still enjoy it.BULL ALIEN:Is that true about the predators helmet?

@ninXneo426 about the Predator helmet? Yes, he was there only to stop the queen and the outbreak and to clean things up the best he could but it went to hell fast.

MemberPraetorianFeb-11-2017 8:33 PM

Thank you.I didn't know that about the helmet.

somewhere in the middle for me. I found the characters kinda boring (except David and Shaw) the acting wasn't great (fassbender was great as usual) I liked some bits, but overall it was kinda bland in my opinion. Not terrible by any means, but not great

I agree and I feel the same. There's only so much depth in Prometheus that people want to give it.

There is no official "Prometheus explained" other than people making up their own explanations with a good dose of vivid imagination. I admire that but I don't buy into the "explained" stuff myself the same way I don't believe rumours in gossip magazines.

You can basically direct a short film, introduce a series of incoherent scenes and slap a label on it that says "ambiguity", and it could be expanded upon by fans watching it. If other qualities of the work make up for it, people can overlook issues, it's just a matter of where you draw your line.

I prefer old-school well written stories.

Prometheus was simply badly written, riddled with plot holes, and downright stupid characters. Most critics criticised the plot regardless of the final score. Some people can overlook these issues, other felt like it ruined the film.

I can still remember the first Prometheus trailer; reading the lines, "they went looking for our beginning...", and, "...what they found will be our end", which had me frothing at the mouth. Unfortunately, the way the film turned out was suboptimal.

A flawed masterpiece. Many reasons for the problems, but I would say the greatest mistake was hiring Lindelof. RS had a bold and risky vision for the movie. It could have been pulled-off to much greater effect with a carefully crafted screenplay featuring  well-written supporting characters. Have the mystery but so many hanging threads. Spaiths version was too much like an Alien re-boot, and I'm glad they didn't go with that.

Covenant looks like it will have solid characters, and a well structured storyline and script. My fear is the possibility of over reliance on the type of monster chases we've seen many times before. I want the story to be deep, about seeking out answers. I would also want to see some justice done to the Shaw character, and not just booted to the curb (as Newt and Hicks were basically just put into a trash can in Alien 3). I think Shaw deserves better than that.

Underrated. It was a super slick movie. A lot of the complaining I see it petty and snobby. It was cool to look at and made me nervous. I might change one or two things but on the whole the movie is a big keeper.

I got the same impression based on the casting, their merits respectively, and my first, although brief, impression of the acting in the trailer.

I'm mostly looking forward to see Waterson, McBride and Crudup.

I'm not looking forward to see Rapace again, at all. Only an explanation of what happened to her should she have perished already.

i feel that Rapace is a very good actress but not for this kinda movie, i was actually that she took the role, i don't think its her, besides that prometheus was flawed but i enjoyed it non the less, hope Covenant takes a few things from it, namely the special effects and CGI, even the depth of the movie in some places, "always having to look a little deeper than what is presented" 7-8/10 could have been better but i fully enjoyed it. i actually didn't know about the ties to alien coz i didn't see the trailer, my ex girlfriend suggested it,lol. at least she had one useful contribution to my life
