MemberOvomorphMay-13-2012 9:57 AMThink about it right...., a director/designer has to imagine what hairstyle would be prevalent in the future. So far, for me the only Alien movie that calls for shit haircuts is Cameron's Aliens, those haircuts look well Eighties.
The rest did okay, shaven heads, sensible crew cuts and so forth.
But, David's haircut, and it's a mad color, blonde as a field of wheat, is . . lets face, it a bit camp. He's even got a saucy smile to go with it.
Is this a deliberate facade? To make him androganistically appeasing to both sexes, to gainstay respect and trust? From what I assume is a relatively mis-trusting shipcrew?
Remember Ash, was a seriously hard looking fucker wasn't he?

Yeah man.I see what mean. All part of the act.Potentially murderous androids come with smiles and bad barnets. He wouldn't harm a fly.Would he?...."Why are you carrying that frying-pan David?"....."Are you going to make me a mushroom omelette?"

MemberOvomorphMay-13-2012 10:15 AMI still honestly believe that David is going to ultimately prove to be heroic.

MemberOvomorphMay-13-2012 10:21 AMThe haircuts in Aliens were sooo Eighties indeed, but on the other hand, the use of suits and ties for corporate guys in the 22nd century was brilliant, and the attempt to reinvent the lapel was a nice touch. In sci-fi we are used (and we would expect, to some extent) people wearing fancy and colourful garments. I like the clothing choice in Aliens.
I believe David's haircut and colour are a statement of his diversity, rather than having him bear some kind of iDavid tattoo on the forehead.
Once an android will be indistinguishable from man, then, and only then, Weyland will start to give them a more subtle appearance, and possibly different body/facial features for each unit produced. Hence Ash's uniqueness.
Ridley Scott will eventually tell us how the Queen was born.
Right now we have the Deacon; coming soon the Mercury, the May and the Taylor.

MemberOvomorphMay-13-2012 10:30 AMOf course his hair style is cheesy! He's an android... a robot, a DOLL. This just adds to his eeriness and character. For what it's worth, I think he will be a "good guy", but that may be more complicated than it sounds, as far as the story line...IMO

MemberOvomorphMay-13-2012 10:37 AMDavid's hair makes him reminiscent of a Ken doll. So does that make Vickers a Barbie doll? The blonde, straight hair parted to the side seems very timeless and an idealized appearance of a man (with short, straight hair).

MemberOvomorphMay-13-2012 10:44 AMDavid is supposed to be someone's idealized version of man.

MemberOvomorphMay-13-2012 11:25 AMFassbender & Ridley Scott both have said that one of the inspirations for David is Peter O'Toole as T.E. Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia:

I think Fassbender mentioned David Bowie in The Man Who Fell to Earth

MemberOvomorphMay-13-2012 11:41 AM@ Fury161. I agree with you, to a degree anyway. I think David will probably think that what he does during the course of the story is for the betterment of humanity and our knowledge, but that he will end up doing the crew harm by accident.

Yes. David is as androidgenous as they come.
(And just a touch Aryan for ambiguous measure.)

MemberOvomorphMay-13-2012 12:33 PMGuys guys...i have the same hair a bit more edgy...David's haircut is influenced by second world war german hairstyle (german officer) and the colour is a bit gold also ....plus take notice of his buttoned up shirt (military dressing ...)!!!Charlize 's hair have a very sleeky fix on the back which is imposible for a woman to do herself without spending on hour or more...take notice of the documentary trailer and you see Charlize by the side having splited hair with this twist on the back....i think Ridley was trying to make them look more distant and cold from the rest of the ''hippie''-group...see that scarf on warm-eye guy!!!

MemberOvomorphMay-13-2012 12:49 PMI know what you mean but It's hard to foretell where hairstyles will go. We develop an aesthetic for our own times and so many things seem campy and tacky. I think it fits the character and the general aesthetic of the movie. In a few years we may be looking at the mowhawk and the tattoos and crying "Camp!"
I will always dig Lambert's haircut in ALIEN.
Maybe we should start a thread called 'what is your favorite ALIEN franchise haircut.'

And did you know that Ripley and Lambert (with that haircut) had a thing going at one point?
I'm not sure if they every filmed it properly or not, but there is at least some of the prototype for the scene shown in the documentary on the Anthology Blu-Ray.
It was Ridley's idea, apparently.

MemberOvomorphMay-13-2012 3:09 PMSukkal, I think I can recall what it is you're referring to.
I think David, if he were real, would probably describe our views on life, sexuality and indeed haircuts as "Quaint".

MemberOvomorphMay-13-2012 3:38 PMDavid's haircut is a representation of the once 'Hitler Youth' hairstyle of Nazi Germany and it has made a comeback recently and cited in news articles:

MemberOvomorphMay-13-2012 3:41 PMTBH I think it's more a representation of how some styles are timeless. Every so often a fashion goes out of style, but then it comes back in again several years later - it's cyclical. I don't think it's based on a Hitler youth cut when RS has stated that he drew inspiration from T.E. Lawrence.

MemberOvomorphMay-13-2012 3:49 PMSo funny that someone posted about this, because a thought occurred to me yesterday and I was going to post on it:
Has anyone considered the possibility that David's seriously Aryan appearance could be a sort of underhanded, casual nod to the "Master Race" concept espoused by regimes like the Nazis and others?
What made me think of it was the short clip of him walking into the chamber declaring "A superior species, no doubt." (I know he wasn't referring to himself, but I get the impression from watching some of the clips that David considers himself superior to humans in some way). Between that and the blonde hair/blue eyed styling (although his look more grey), it reminded me of the way Hitler and his cronies elevated "Aryanism" to the level of a cult.
Perhaps Weyland had something similar in mind.

you seem a little "Proud" positing that picture which reflects perhaps the DARKEST era in mankind's history !!! Hope I'm mistaken in that assumption.
