MemberOvomorphJune 28, 2012So reading the Cinefex article has revealed some mind blowing FX tricks as well as answered some questions the film poses.
One revelation comes in the section regarding the examination and reanimation of the severed Engineer head. Now, many of us have speculated about this but it seems we now have some answers. In regards to Shaw and Ford reanimating the head the article says...
"The crew's intervention stimulates a dormant infection that deforms the severed head in a bizarre mutation..."
Now, as I said many of us had speculated as to why the head exploded and what the Engineers were running from and it seems we now have an answer. Which explains why many of the Engineers in the pile outside the closed door have holes in their heads.
In regards to the FX of the severed head most was done in camera which blows my mind. When I saw that scene and the head opened it's eyes and it's face started to contort I thought it was CG all the way. Not the case. It was a practical head with servos. The CG came in the form of the bubbles forming and bursting. A truly wonderful meld of practical and digital effects.
Quite revealing about the Engineer helmet that David removes from the head is this...
"When the helmet opened, Ridley wanted the interior to be velvety and soft like the lining of a stomach, as if the helmet had nutured the internal head with life giving material."
Also revealed at the beginning of the article is that the Sacrificial Engineer is, in fact, on "Primordial Earth."
I'm not finished with the article but there are other interesting FX techniques as well as answers and revelations regarding the film. I will have to finish it and read it again to come and post further. But this is a very juicy article and I recommend everyone buy the book. Except for the winner of my contest! They'll get it for free!
