I am of course talking about Alien Ressurection. Now when normally the public agrees a movie sucks, I tend to agree with them also. But I never understood the hate for Alien 4. I'll give you the reasons why I like it first -grotesque and artistic cinematography...there is something truly creepy about that intro and all the horrible fetuses etc..watching this movie makes me wanna puke...that's a good thing...it is definitely more visually interesting than aliens or alien3 i think...alien wins because of the derelict -the newborn..pretty good idea I thought..ripley takes some alien dna, and the queen receives some human dna..pretty good sci-fi writing on a Michael Crichton level -The crew are cool...yup, they manage to reinstall that feeling from Alien, when they make you give a shit about the crew...no scarf wearers (Im looking at you Prometheus)...Michael Wincott dies far too early though, he is too cool a character to kill off so early...I also love Ron Perlman and Winona...cool cast Now the things I don't like: -They show too much of the Alien...to be honest tho, after Aliens we pretty much saw everything anyway -I hate that space marine guy that ends up tagging along.. jarhead moron..the rest of the military is also too comical and not serious enough..Aliens had a good balance of comedy and realism with their military -the CGI Alien...looked terrible...CGI=not scary Anyway would like to hear reasons why you like Alien Ressurection

I read the script before the movie came out and was excited about it. Thought it was going to be a big improvement over Alien 3, which I liked overall, but was a bit of a letdown after the first two. Unfortunately, the script didn't seem to transfer to the screen very well (IMHO) and they changed a couple of aspects that didn't seem to work. Example: The "Newborn" in the script seemed to be a lot nastier and meaner. The movie didn't seem to portray it in the same manner, and it kind of looked silly to me compared to how it was described in the script. It was an entertaining movie, but just didn't hold a candle to the others. However, I did get to meet Ron Perlman, who was hanging outside the movie theater taking pictures with some of the other cast members (I saw it opening night in Hollywood at The Chinese theater), so maybe that boosted my feelings about the film a little.

The first 45 minutes are actually pretty good, then it all becomes incredibly predictable and boring.

I liked it alot.. I agree with you that it has a creepy feel to it. Some might nok like the Ripley clone (8), but I like her for being cold. If we forget she died in Alien 3, her emotional state would properbly be something like that, indifferent - she doesn't remember anything else in her life then that beast. There is a different emotional impact in Resurrection, and the idea of the newborn looking at Ripley (8) as it's mother is a new and bold idea to execute. I find it to be more true to the first Alien movie. Yes I also have some script issues, the marines are way to comical, and Jeunet is actually making a mockery out of Holywood (I'm european, and I see it). It's a good honest movie in my book, with some visuals beyond anything. That said I still like Scott's universe better (No doubt).. To think about Aliens and Alien 3 - Aliens to me was somewhat raping Alien (Lore) and Alien 3 perhaps the most underrated movie of all time - I find it to be a very beautiful story about pain and resignation.

I thought Alien 3 was a fantastic movie. Nothing wrong with crash landing on a prison colony that has no weapons......adds to the hopelessness i thought. Plus it keeps the industrial theme of ALIEN. Survival was definatley for the fitest. Resurrection i liked.....BECAUSE it was full of aliens lol. I just love seeing the Xenomorph in all of its different versions. And for the new Prometheus movie everyone wants to see something new......well we did remember......the new born in Resurrection. We`ve had the new stuff before now lets see its origins WITHOUT those bloody predators lol.

Alien 3 IS a fantastic movie, i agree Mark. The atmosphere and look of the film is incredible. I find the whole thing very claustrophobic. Great cast too. Alien Resurrection is a travesty. Everything about it is wrong

Just my own opinion but both films were awful. The only part in 3 and 4 I liked was at the end of 3 when the company arrive at the planet. I thought Ripley was a good character, but the film was Ridley's. The film, Alien, to me was about the derelict and the future of us as a race. It explored lots of great themes along these lines, everytime we saw the alien it was about what is this thing, where did it come from, how strange it looks, what is the derelict ... Aliens was just a way to continue the killing with the same scenary. The Alien concept was never scenary, it was thought-provoking, and I hope Promethesus makes us think like Alien did. Loved Alien, happy with Aliens, need to have my memory wiped after that as I could have cried with what they did with Ridley's great idea.

Just from my name you can probably tell that I absolutely love Alien Resurrection. But I absolutely love the last 3 movies as well. I love all 4 films as though they were my children. They were all different in their own ways and they carry their own voice.

Like the idea of "super Ripley". The movie was just so poorly handled. Oneliners-"Guess it's a chick thing." do not belong in an Alien movie. Didn't have the tension or gritty realness all the others have. Not scary at all. I actually like the writers and director. They just shouldn't have done an Alien film. I don't hate it, I just pretend it's some kind of spin off.
I may work for the company, but im really an OK guy.

Alien 3 and 4 need to be thrown into fire along with Ripley.

I've always thought Alien Resurrection was underrated and was disappointed that it didn't do better, revenue-wise. There were some great new ideas in it and it went in a daring new direction for the series. I did dislike a few things: 1) The human-alien hybrid monster looked silly. 2) The queen was killed off far too easily. 3) Near the end, when you see the ship approaching Earth, Earth is mirror-imaged. That kind of sloppiness instantly destroys the suspension of disbelief. But those disappointments were peripheral. I loved the aesthetics of it, and all the memorable moments like the one alien being sacrificed so its blood would melt an escape hole through the cage, the moment when the drop of Ripley's blood hits the floor and start eating into it (I still remember thinking, OK, WTF), the room full of failed clones, the musings about identity..... Nothing could really compensate for the let-down of Alien 3, but this came close.

here, the coming, is where we disagree. Just awful. The director had little but contempt for the original Alien, you can read his review online. I am not one to bash the French, but what changed his snotty Euro trash opinion of Alien b/w 1979 and Alien Resurrection? Ripley in any shape or form was so damn boring by that point I would have gone Mark David Chapman and killed her (the character, not Weaver, for you paranoid types) myself if given the chance and, well, the comic scenes didn't work but the scenes meant to be suspenseful were hilarious. Winona Ryder did a better job in Dracula (cough, cough). I find Alien 3 to be a far nobler, though failed, effort to bring the grimness of the original back and actually endanger Ripley, thus making me actually worried for her. Super Ripley is, well, Super Ripley. Brad Douriff. You know any movie made since 1992 with him in it will have to suck. It is an immutable law of nature. Having said that, there are some good looking shots in it. But no, Alien Resurrection is everything that went wrong with the series.

although I will say his review of Alien in 1979 was hilarious. But definitely not a guy to direct the 4th entry.

I liked them 'for what they were'. Stop comparing all these movies (AVP, Alien4 etc) with Alien and you can just sit back, relax and enjoy them 'for what they are'. HAVING said that, I was massively disappointed when I first saw Alien4 in the cinema. Gutted in fact. I'm praying Prometheus is different...

chthon... There won't be any worries with Sir Scott back in control. We will see what we all have been DYING to see since the original Alien...but there'll be a MULTITUDE of questions and avenues to open up in Prometheus---just the way we want it.

@ the coming It is available at Alien Movie Resources Here is the bit: ALIEN Review by Jean-Pierre Jeunet The following review originally appeared in the French magazine "Fluide Glacial" in 1980. It is by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who would go on to direct Alien Resurrection 17 years later. Translation by Pierre M. "Alien is a very pleasant comedy, where astronauts back from the moon are trying to catch their cat hiding in the rocket. In order to do this they use bunch of clever tricks, one of them even finds a costume of a long-nailed bug to scare the pet. After some contrarious incidents (one of them dies of a bad cold, coughing too hard... his colleague with the costume falls from the door...), the chief lady gets the cat back and make the planet Crypton explode." Maybe I am being too hard on him. He may have liked it and was just having a bit of fun. But still . . .

I thought Alien 3 is a cool movie, especially with all the 'problems' with its production. Its gritty, raw, lovely textured, great music and cinematography (superb really,) Ripley had a better story arc then she did in Aliens. I never understood why people didn't like it, maybe it was because of Hicks and Newt's death. Don't misunderstand, before the movie came out I collected Alien magazines and some of the story's featured a teenaged Newt finding love with a synthetic (who didn't even know he was one) all brilliant and fascinating ideas, so yeah I was I little disappointed after seeing it for the first time, but I reckon people should take it how it is.... I great throwback to what Alien was all about. -Plus who can forget some of the best lines like "do you want it on your feet or on your ****ing knees! and f' it... lets go for it!" -yeah back to the OP's original question.... I reckon Alien 4 is proof that even with a (so called) good director, without an exciting script and new thinking it was going to bomb. I still think there's nothing wrong with some of the miniature work, but the whole movie was just walking the halls with a lot of "what the h3ll are these things!!" boring really, still I'm glad someone like it.

Alien Noerection(Alien 4) was horrendous on so many levels. Not scary, not frightening, not spooky, not claustrophobic in any way. It was goofy and ruined by semi retarded CGI. The Aliens were slimy jet black muscular pieces of terd....not serpentine demonic unknowns from the previous movies. Ron Periman was ok but that's about it. Ripley was ridiculous. Winona was an unbelievable dumb character, and who the hell is still in a wheelchair like that 200 years in the future? The swimming Aliens almost ruined the whole franchise for me, and I feel I saw them waaay to much...no mystery left I suppose. Even the much maligned Alien 3 was a gem compared to this farse! The mutants, babies, half breeds were all wrong too...trying to be disturbing but failed by shoving it in our faces. This movie made me go back and fall in love with Alien 3. I don't consider Alien Noerection canon or part of the Alien universe, so I'm sooooo excited for Ridley Scott to bring this franchise back. Sorry, I know the original poster wanted to know who liked this movie and not dislike...but had to vent

About the review Fluide Glacial is a humoristic magazine. the review was a fake review making a joke.

@Shinobix9x Glad to know he was just having a bit of fun, as I said before. My question remains though if the humor in the mag is directed at targets viewed by its writers with disdain or not. And every joke as they say . . . He did try to bring some of that humor to Alien Resurrection which is one of the reasons I think it doesn't work. Or maybe it is just his humor. I mean Parker and Brett and are funny, Hudson is the scene stealer of the series, but the humor in Alien Resurrection just doesn't fly for me. But who knows, maybe he is making it a bigger point, like the author and Scott did with Hannibal: poking fun at what the series has become. If I watch it purely as satire I may appreciate it more. Also, I am with you on the marine fakeness. But it works (again, for me) because the movie is just pure fantasy action. The characters are fantasy marines and still likeable. Even Gorman. Don't forget, Cameron is the guy who wrote Rambo. Now, I don't like the direction Cameron took Aliens in but he did it brilliantly.

lets face it, there are 4 very different Alien films, each one from the other. The only thing is what flaws there are, I mean, Aliens, Alien3 and resurrection have flaws IMO, but even resurrection is better that many other sci-fis. flaws in alien 4 : - alien cages are not acid proof. after hundreds of years after Alien, this is ridiculous. - ripley ´s strange behaviour - scene with the cocooned scientist, when baby alien mutant is born, as he , still cocooned, explains the plot..in love with the baby mutant, then his head gets eaten by it.. my god how silly. - CGI aliens this no dark comedy, this is just bad.

Because of the "wait" until getting something new, I enjoyed it, but was disappointed and don't consider it a "real" Alien movie... But, then again, I don't really consider A.2 a "real" Alien movie, though it is certainly more "real" than is A.3 or A.4...

I always found it odd that Whedon panned Alien Resurrection because after Buffy and Firefly/Serenity it feels exactly like something that he would have made, even down to the semi-comedic tongue-in-cheek tone to it. Now maybe Whedon was going for something more dark and sinister, but it just feels like a Whedon movie to me. As for the movie itself, I like it. A lot. I mean, it's a part 4. Considering that most part 4 movies are absolute crap, I appreciate that the film tried something different instead of trying to re-create Aliens or something. There weren't too many tonal directions to take after Alien3. An Alien movie with some black comedy is one of the few places you could have taken another Alien movie. That said, I would be interested to have seen what a different director could have done. I think JPJ did a good job and all, but for a 1997 movie, I would have liked to see what a younger director like Jonathan Mostow could have done with it.

I personally love the first 3(Alien being the favorite of course.) Number 4 grew on me. I enjoyed how tricky the Aliens were and theit tacts and what not. The visual aspect as pretty good. Althoug i do agree that the script was out to the wrong use. I read on wikipedia the writer, i believe it was Joss Whedon. hated the movie because the script was interpreted and acted wrong. Overall, i find this to be an actually very good movie.
