The black goo is described by ridley scott as an evolution accelerant. A part of evolutionary theory is the environment plays a factor.

In the movie Alien, while ash was examining the facehugger. He stated to ripley that it was made up of polarised silcon cells.

This takes me to Prometheus . After they open the ample room and the canisters start to leak. A storm hits, captain Janex desrcibes the storms as containing silca and it was electric in some way. Theses factors could of blended with the black goo and become the bases for the xeno creature.

Silicon/silica is a mineral that resides in every living creature (also forna) on Earth. Collagen, which holds our skin fibres in place like glue, contains silicon. Sand is also made up of mainly silicon.

Earth is abundant in sand, therefor silicon/silica. We also have sand storms here on Earth, so i would imagine, that there are alot of other planets in the universe that have sand storms.

Therefor, just because there was a sand/silicon storm on LV 223, doesn't necessarily mean that is where the Giger Alien originated from.

The poster was good though!

However, LV 223 OR LV 426 are the most probable candidates for the home of the Giger Alien. SO FAR.

Indeed while every lifeform does have some Silica and are all carbon based, i think the franchise is showing us that the Xeno has more Silicone Based elements in its genetic make up.

Maybe the fact the storms on LV 223 are trying to sugest the place as high amounts of Silica in them could be a hint at some connection, but then that may not be the case.   Maybe as LV 223 is a place that is far more richer as far as amounts of Silica could as a Sci Fi stand point indicate maybe lifeforms on the moon could have more larger amounts of Silicone to their Genetic Make up... i.e the Worms...

But we do not know the true genetic differences of the Worms compared to life on Earth or Worms on Earth, so there is no way to see how close genetically life on LV 223 is to Earths.

Likewise some have concluded the Hammerpedes Acid for Blood must mean that this came from the Worms and so the Hammerpede must be  related to the Xeno and it came from Hammerpedes, now while that dont mean the ones in Prometheus, we cant rule out that those Worms could have thousands of years before had came into contact with the Goo.

But from what i make of the movie, its the substance in the Urns that passed on the Acid Blood Trait to the Hammerpedes, and i use Shaws Trillobite for proof, if you look at the Engineer vs Trillobite full attack scene, not including the first shot as it opens the door (which was shot after the attack scene)  I concluded that the Engineer got Face Burnt just before the Trillobite gained the upper hand and implanted its tube down his throat... but alas the theatrical release which we have to take as Canon, shows us the Engineer was burnt before he entered the lifeboat.... (but this dont hide how the burn disapears during the fight scene). Only to come back again...

As far as the Xeno goes.....

i think it is some hybrid creation, created from a event or experiment and either a intended result, a unknown result or purely accidental one.

The deacon (Mural) i think must be either the result of a Traditional Face Huger on a Engineer, or indeed (and most likely) some other earlier type Face Huger that infected a Engineer.

The Deacon at the end, well was due to the Face Huger being Part Human, i would assume had no Human DNA been envolved and thus a traditional or better still the other Face Huger (Mural and unused Alien Mural) would lead to a Deacon that has teeth and hands like a traditional Xeno.

We cant rule out that any contaminant from LV 223 made the Alien Xeno what it was.

But i am certain that the orginal creature, the one that these Engineers either found or created that led to a all maner of Xeno related Organisms, did not come from LV 223 or LV 426.

Maybe Paradise would show us clues to what this creature was but then i would hope it never came from Paradise too....

Maybe this missing link is the creature in the Frescos...?

@BigDave It does seem like the Engineer artwork is trying to explain parts of the lifecycle. We see eggs, things that look like facehuggers etc.

IMO the creature could definitely be some sort of relative or ancestor of the Alien, and has a designated role in things. There's gotta be a reason Ridley included it/added it into things.

Since we're going to the Engineer homeworld in Paradise, I actually hope that there's an Alien homeworld out there somewhere. One that's not LV 223 or LV426.  I've always kind of been fond of the ideas that were looked at for Alien 5. At one point Ridley and James Cameron were talking about doing Alien 5 together and going to the Alien home planet. However this never came to be, and Ridley moved ahead with the untitled prequel projects (as they started). I'm secretly holding out hope that there IS an Alien homeplanet out there, and that Cameron and Ridley both hatched some ideas towards this while Cameron taught Ridley to film in 3D...

Basically I suspect there's more to why Cameron helped Ridley get used to the 3D cameras...I think they left some of their old Alien 5 plans in tact, and a trip to the Alien homeworld could still potentially be in our future...

I'm also liking some of those ideas about things evolving under different circumstances, and the contaminant concept. There was also a lot of stuff in the air that would have been hazardous for us to breathe. You reminded me about a major thing that sets the Alien apart from us, it doesn't need to breathe in space, and i'm somehow thinking that's important now, maybe linked to the terraforming ideas. As you said, Zombie-Fiefield had a cracked helmet, and the Alien DNA might have allowed him to survive outside without breathing.

At hiveminded.

Fifield was breathing out side. When the door was lowered and the crew member kicked him. Fifield stood up with his chest heaving. But thats not really my point. There are pictures of the engineer running through wreckage, I believe on this way to attack shaw . I think this can suggest that he can exist in both environments.

@ oduodu

ME a scientist LOL, Nope! I understand enough about science to make coffee, change the station on cable and separate darks from lights when doing laundry LOL.

No seriously I have about 8 years of college and a lot of those credit hours are science classes and computer classes. I would like to think I can understand the control from what you should be testing. It is not as easy to do unless have a real working hypothesis to go on.

So for example I was reluctant just to consider that because there was a big silca "Sand storm" in the movie that we should all incorporate that into the development of the Xeno.

This is pure speculation so no slaps from way across the room LOL. My best guess is that the engineers are much smarter than we think. They can create a complete creature like the Xeno from the DNA molecules up. They use worlds like ours for testing thier weapons perhaps.

Thats what I really think. I just watched Prometheus again today for the 30th time and every time I get to when they wake him up he has the most unpleasent reaction to us. I think the Engineer that we wake up realizes that part of his experiment has gotten lose so then he tries to kill all of us.

And before everyone jumps up, beating me over the head with all the stone carvings and the cave paintings...yep I think it is a contradiction too. Why did they come to earth make us there show us where they are making thier weapons of mass destruction and then when we get there this Engineer goes nuts and then tries to kill us all???? ahhhhh I sure would like the answer to that one.

@ PulseRifle Well we do know there was some oxygen.

There was just too much other harmful stuff in the air for humans to be able to breathe for too long. It's not the lack of oxygen that would kill them in 2 mins, it's other stuff that's in the air. If they breathe in too much of that it'll poison them. Our lungs process the air, and release co2 for plants to use... We don't even need 100% of the oxygen we take in, because that will do damage to us too. We filter the air ,process it, and create co2 with the leftover oxygen and carbon. We actually need nitrogen in our atmosphere. At high altitudes there's less oxygen. On Mt. Everest's older brother on LV-223, there's even less oxygen.

People born in the Himalayas have an evolutionary advantage, they're barrel chested, have large lung capacity, born adapted to take in more oxygen at higher altitudes where the oxygen is thin. I think the Engineers have developed in ecosystems that have less oxygen.

They might be able to make due with what they had there. Maybe they were terraforming the outside world to make it breathable, but it had already hit acceptable levels for them, and the highest concentration of oxygen stays in the temple, where the air is "cleaner than earth".

My whole theory on the helmetless Engineer is that their lungs are already bigger then ours, more lung capacity, evolutionary advatages that allow them to breathe thinner air, and process oxygen/co2 better. Some have mentioned the Engineer might have gils. They and other factions can process air, process the environment, process atmosphere even better than Weyland in many, many ways.

"There is nothing in the desert and no man needs nothing" David knew this wasn't their homeworld, suspected they're "mortal after all", and that "gods don't build in straight lines", like Holloway, before they even touched down. Holloway expected that they were going to be full of life. David figured out this was an outpost before anyone else. If they're us, their homeworld must have a better balance between plant life, many types of lifeforms, and more resources for them to exploit.

Fifield shouldn't have been able to process the air outside, but we do see him processing it... I thnk the Alien DNA in him allowed his lungs and insides to morph so that he could take in air a little better. Or that his need for Oxygen was reduced when he started changing.

Can breathe clean air, thin air, dirty air, and able to breathe on ancient Earth, because there was some plant life...The Sacrificial Engineer was helmetless in the opening scene, they show up at a time when oxygen levels were much different. Plant life is barely visible in the opening scenes...And if it wasn't for plant life spreading first, transforming the atmosphere for us initially, and increasing oxygen levels, then a lot of life would have stayed in the ocean. We needed plant life to arise first...The dinosaurs only grew so large because of the amount of oxygen that was available to them. More oxygen and different environments could produce very different Engineers. Weyland already solved global warming while inventing his air processor. Building better worlds, and starting colonies. If there's no breathable air, he'll make it breathable.  This is a technology many advanced species would have their own variations of.... Weyland & David already understand a lot about terraforming planets at this point.

Humans and Engineers tend to view themselves as separate from nature, above it. But the Alien is the perfect organism, part of nature, part of the natural order of things. Weyland had to learn how to make nature work for him. The Engineers thought they could control the Alien. But it's the perfect killing machine, unclouded by morality. This form of the Alien is like living death, and death is part of the natural order of things..

My simple explanation for why the Engineers want to destroy us is because they view us as an experiment gone wrong. A petri dish. A scientific culture, if you will... A colony they were trying to start. But after checking in on us, they realized we started growing in our own ways, and separated into two sexes. I think they did want us to find them, but when we showed up we weren't what the Engineer was expecting. He freaked out that we had already created androids, and saw the way Weyland treated Shaw.

We were supposed to be their colony...So they feel like we're a colony that's growing out of control, we reached them, and we didn't develop the way they wanted, the culture needs to be re-started.

When you're working with petri dishes and bacteriological cultures, the number one rule is to wipe out all the previous organisms that might contaminate things, before you use that petri dish again. Earth is like a petri dish to them in some ways.

They have to scoop up some genetic material to be carried over, then sterelize the planet, before they launch the next experiment, and re-create us...They were just gathering data...Performing experiments, like David..

Sometimes to create one must first destroy, or wipe out all traces of the previously existing genetic material, with fire and by washing the petri dish.

The truth might be David wanted to see Weyland die and got exactly what he wanted. No one else's agenda led or misled that ship.. David manipulated everything/everyone. Schleicher's fable taught him that the crew are sheep, he's the horse, and even the master can be ditched. If one sheep had it "in her" to survive the adventure, then that was fine by him. He had a preference over the the film he likes, the lines he liked, and over how to conduct his experiments. This implies some choice over things. We see his artificial emotions when he watches the movie, or gazes in wonder at the orrery (he also cries in some unreleased footage).  David had choice over some things, particulary a "choice of words" and this could be where his freewill starts to spring from.

@HiveMinded and BigDave!!!

Very cool post. I agree completely on the petri dish analysis. Maybe there is a stronger verb we could use to describe our relationship to the Engineers. I really like how you just went straight to a more clinical “As if the lab animals did something unexpected….sort of reference” in just one of thousands of experimental weapons design projects that they have….well done very cool. I honestly think you could write an incredible science fiction movie HiveMinded you should consider it. BigDave you too….All three of us if we got together I have no doubt we could get a screen play together that no one has ever seen or ever thought about.

I think I am at 30 posts here now and I have to say the level of creativity in here you could not pay for. It’s very unusual that you have people systematically this in depth about sci-fi topics like this. Actually I would like to go further and say that there is a real unique monetary worth here because of the amount of original ideas. Seriously there is lot a of stuff I have read here that I have never read in hundreds of sci-fi novels or seen in movies.

This is ULTRA TOP SECRET but I want to keep this hidden in this thread since you, Dave, and me know about it and are watching it. I want to throw out just a brief TEST concept for a new type of HARD CORE alien movie. You may add to it as you choose! As long as you stick to the main theme.

When Dan O’Bannon wrote the first part of Alien he did not have the other 75% but it all came together with the help of Ronald Shusett, obviously the incredible vision of Giger’s Alien art, and Scotts genius with putting that many talented people together in England to get the special effects perfect.

Ridley Scott was the one who put all those people together in the film studio, got the sets built and made what Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett wrote come to life on the big screen.

Yeah so onto the Top Secret screen play.

Ok it’s a future earth 300 years from now.

Short back story:
Ripley made it back to earth in the last Alien film only there was a queen inside of her that she did not know about. How this would play out on the big screen obviously would not be done with the chest buster scenes because it has been done before in many other films. Note in the third Alien film they waited till the end of the film to show it and the film still did not do that great in theaters.

Moving on!

We are 300 years in the future. There are thousands of different Aliens all over the earth (stay with me here hold on tight) what happens when the facehugger in Alien 3 mixes with the ox – dog like Alien comes out! Incredible awesome beautiful terrifying dark spooky black incredible those silver metallic teeth it just works.

The Aliens have taken over now they are at the top of the food chain…….Except for one thing US!

Humans have managed to hang on in just a few places but we dare not go near the water, jungles, mountains, forests….AHHHHHHHHHHH (you may scream right now if you like) LOL but wait it only gets more terrifying if you dare to read further. Leave it up to your imagination how we have managed to hang on, what technologies we have now….hint we have advanced our weapons and our camouflage capabilities. The Aliens in their now thousands of varieties are master hunter organisms but we are not afraid of them we are better. Light carbon steel strong nano tech bows invisible to the Aliens sight…we are silent and cannot be seen and we hunt them to destroy their HIVES. We move in teams of five, maybe ten because many times we never come back.

What I am about to tell you may be too X-rated to produce into film but I am going to go there anyway!
Read further if you dare!

Camera comes in for a close up of one our scout teams and they have penetrated the outer defenses of a very large ALIEN HIVE.

THE HIVE: it is big as in as big as the Pentagon big and what lays inside no human has ever come out from. New Aliens that are bigger more advanced protect this hive. Even our advanced robotic surveillance small scale mechs “Somehow get detected and ABSORBED BY THE ALIEN WALLS” we see part of the signal but nothing ever makes it too far into this hive.  We believe that there is Alien bio tech inside this hive in the form of a creature that rules all the other warriors but we are not sure.

There are other large HIVES for breading; but, not like the MASTER HIVE, it is as big as a city. We penetrate further every time we learn more about its defenses.

HIVES FOR BREADING:
Do not read this if you are prone to night mares!!!! WARNING GRAFFIC DESCRIPTIONS AHEAD CAUTION!!!!

There are large pits where thousands of humans breed. They are primitive have no language they have no tools. They are all young not more than 20. Aliens walk among them like tending to their sheep. We are docile and FEEDING ALIENS talk to us in an Alien tongue through a series of sounds and gestures. OH God its feeding time. So many times a week a few humans out of the many thousands are taken away out of the pit and consumed whole by several “FEEDING ALIENS” Seriously do not read this if you are sensitive to HORROR!

Back in the human breading pit FEEDING ALIENS have begun the task of calling us to feed. Humans approach the Feeding Alien. Tubes from the Feeding Alien begin to come out of several slit orifices. There are too many humans gathering to feed. Humans begin to consume the protein digested processed humans from the FEEDING ALIEN. As one human fills up others lay close waiting for the tendril like appendage to give them a mix of digested human tissues, powerful narcotic molecules, and other things that have been eaten and harvested from new plants.

These feeding pits are much larger than airports and have high walls that are secreted and made by the Aliens. What is left of the human race breads completely as a primary food stock in pits like this all over the world. There are only a few hundred thousand free humans left and our numbers are not holding we know we must find out what is in the MASTER HIVE.

Our survival depends upon what can do to penetrate this horror that has taken control of our planet and enslaved our world.

HiveMinded…..BigDave lets gather round! Message me so we can get together on Skype and flesh out a screenplay or even a book….we could each write chapters and in a couple months we might have a reboot so strong it could get produced into a real movie. I only shared a small amount of this type of story. I like sci-fi so hard it would bust Superman’s @ZZ in two! LOL  No more of this messing around stuff. This kind of story can go anywhere it’s not limited. It’s new never seen before and such a hard R it would hook fans instantly. Here’s why….what’s the most popular tv series ever made? Walking Dead. The Walking Dead is total hard horror and you know what it works, people like it as opposed to some stupid reality tv show…..Now put your hands in here boys shake on it and lets make this so hard it would make the Walking Dead look like Sesame Street!.

Lately I've actually been thinking about the possibilities that TV offers over movies.  Sometimes movies don't allow you to tell the full story you wanna tell, because you have to wait for so long to do part 2, or there are so many different corporate interests along the way...

Sometimes the original vision can get lost in translation. Or you get off to a good small beginning, but there's so much time in-between, and you never got to fit enough things into part-one that help "evolve the grand idea" like Ripley said he wants to do in Paradise (like I think happened here).

It seems clear to me that Ridley does have ideas about where things are going, but he might still need time to work it all out.  We heard about the two untitled alien prequels before this even got a title, so I think they've already sat down, him and Fox etc, and looked at general story ideas, before he talked for hours with Lindelof and Spaights, as both of them recalled. Both writers talked about how Ridley was pitching things to them, so in some ways I trust Ridley's vision and want him to be able to tell his whole story about Engineers and the Alien.

Alien 5 is something I'd love to be involved with...I have so many ideas for how that might happen and want to eventually re-build the "Swiss family Robinson in space" ideas that Cameron had for Alien 3, but I believe it shouldn't happen until at least after Paradise...My basic idea is that MOTHER and FATHER secretly got back together in Alien Ressurrection through Call, and Call was really on a mission, got info about Ripley 8 and what the Marines were doing (taking over Weyland-Yutani), she started worshipping the cross because of David and Shaw somehow in the past... When Call left for Earth with Ripley she carried Father back with her, and Ripley 8 was unaware that many things were being brought back online at Anchorage station... But by the time they get near there, Earth was in ruins...

There are now Hives on Earth. Ripley takes control of the Marines, knows the Alien inside and out...Has a subtle link to the Alien Empress on the Alien world. Call had to form a connection with FATHER to call him back to Earth, where Call soon reveals her true purpose was to smuggle Ripley 8 away from the sections of the Marines that had rebelled. By this point in time Weyland/FATHER has almost learned his lesson.  Alien ressurrection would kind of be the odd one out, but secretly becomes a bridge that joins the end of this series and Alien 5. This would take things back to being more like Aliens and Alien, with horror elements when they enter the Empress hive, and meet other types of Alien they haven't encountered yet. Some Deacons would be there etc.  If Ridley sets things up properly I think there are actually ways to improve Alien Ressurrection and continue with an Alien 5...Part of me suspects that Cameron and Ridley did go over some of their old Alien 5 ideas, when Cameron taught Ridley how to film in 3D.

What about a Weyland-Yutani TV show? My idea would be to distance it from Prometheus and the Alien movies a little bit, and call it something like "The Company".  They'd explore the universe and fight battles against the 3 world Empire, mentioned in some of the early drafts of Alien 3.  In the future of both Prometheus and Bladeunner it's the multinational corporation that's become King.  Weyland was compared to a King, because he basically ruled planet Earth...As well as many, many, colonies, in a vast network of worlds.  All joined to the company. In the Weyland timeline it reveals Weyland already has colonies all over, he's building better worlds everywhere, so that would allow you to go into the possible science behind terraforming, terraforming a planet from scratch (little atmosphere), or some of the theories NASA is looking at for Mars, etc.

In the video where they're interviewing the crew Holloway says he's already been on a couple tours for Weyland corp. there were a couple early ideas that Weyland already found some Engineer evidence on Mars and underwater, but these weren't used, some of the Martian references in Prometheus could be played with. The show wouldn't deal with Engineers directly, it could be a chance to jump around in time/space all across the Alien universe, and allow for details to be filled out about the company. If Fox/Ridley signed off on it, and made it like Fringe or X-Files, you could deal with mainly the company, androids, terraforming, and secrets Weyland corp is hiding. While keeping the Engineer and Alien reveals for the film series.

Paradise/Alien movies would focus on Engineers and Aliens and the unanswered questions there. But this could be about all the company's dirty little secrets.

Some episodes would detail how the different classes and ranks of Weyland-Yutani employee work. In some ways this would be in contrast with the ways social organization, and class division occurs in Engineer and Alien species.  The company still has to deal with credits/shares of resources. The pilots like Ripley and Janek would be sort of the upper class of Weyland-Yutani's ranking system, and even the Yuanti side of the company is sort of it's own faction, who hasn't always been completely on board with what the Weyland side wants. Pilots earned their wings and get certain privelges that other Weyland employees don't, including more credits/shares towards their retirement, if W-Y lets them retire...

Diff episodes, or story arcs, seasons etc, could start at different points in Weyland's universe. We'd sometimes deal with the Marines, learn how they formed, more about how they operate. The Marines would be capable of earning their wings, and becoming pilots.

Hour long shows like Walking Dead, Fringe, Game of Thrones, American Horror story etc. are what a lot of people crave now.  If you can do it right, a sci-fi TV show might fill the vacuum that Fringe has left behind. There's a lot of sci-fi horror still on TV,  and shows about sci-fi/futuristic themes, but what I'm thinking is a show that's mainly sci-fi and more so about the Androids, or employees in the company that start to question Weyland's agendas.

There's a lot of potential for stories based around the company and androids.  The marines could even interact with other species in the universe besides Alien and Engineer. It could show them dealing with other lifeforms who are more like the ones they're used to when they said "just another bug hunt" and brought up things about Arcturians. Every once in a while you'd have characters similar to Xerxes and Caryn Delacroix from the old darkhorse comics pop in. Caryn Delacroix is a genetically engineered trophy wife provided to Weyland upper management. Ravel and Chance thought miss Vickers could be payed to receive a lapdance, but Vickers was real, neither clone nor robot...However, there are a number of Vickers out there in the universe now, and Weyland kinda cloned his daughter...David was the closest thing to real son, and that was real Vickers, but the Vickers clones would be the star of the show at some points... The Android consciousness known as Toy rules the minds of some of the clones. Humans are subject to manipulation and programming through dreams and memories, and it likes to play with its toys like Holloway... Xerxes was an old dark horse character that was immortal for some reason...

Elite marines are secretly welcomed to Weyland's makeshift forms of immortality...We would find out Weyland has already uploaded his consciousness into backup storage. Certain elite Marines are welcomed to the forms of immortality Weyland secretly possesses.  Basically Weyland has been tricking minds, tricking minds back to life, and tricking his own mind back to life since the Weyland memorial in the Weyland-Yutani timeline..A memorial service was held for him at a certain point in time, but many forgot that he died. Vickers was the only one who knew his body was being kept alive through technology, and he already made himself partially bio-mechanical, could control the dreamstate in cryo, to extend his life...Had already seen the "other side" and was only sleepwalking, a walking zombie in Prometheus...Weyland had already planted false memories in the human crews' subconsciousness, and couldn't answer Shaw's calls when she left him the first messages because he was already dead... Vickers asked if anyone died during cryo, and then told David to wake them up, because cryo is already a state between life and death, and in that sense waking them up meant tricking their minds back to life all the way... the crews minds'/dreams/memories have been recorded this whole time...the body has a chance of not waking up out of cryo.. Normal marines subconsciously knew that when they died it was "Game over, man, the end". But some characters like Hicks were reawakened into the virtual reality known as the Colonial Marines training center and brought back to life...In the Colonial Marines videogame those weren't real aliens and they were just moving hicks through a virtual reality back into the real world, into a clone or robot body...After waking up his mind. Morse, from Alien 3, gets to be the first bio-mechanical member of the company, and we meet him in Paradise, where he then joins the show. This greatly enhanced his ability to interact with Toy, and live through the timeline. Strikeforce, the elite faction of the Marines, dealt with the Alien before the Marines did. Marines thought Aliens were within their paygrade, but they were being trained while the company tried to infect Ripley.

Xerxes was the only character attached to the company that claimed immortality before all this immortality business started up, he got ripped apart by an alien and shows up again somehow, but it was never really explained in the old comics...They either cloned him and achieved full consciousness transfer, or Xerxes from the old comics might have had some gifts Weyland shared with him...Hicks can't be reawakened into his own body, at least not the way it was, because his mind has been active in the virtual worlds while his body aged, and becomes bio-mechanical like Morse, Ravel and the Engineers, Chance was a clone... My whole idea is that the androids were always the ones who wanted the bio-weapon. It was Weyland who wanted immortality, and actually thought the Alien had medical applications... Basically, the company isn't necessarily as evil as we've always thought: it's the androids that make it that way. Over time..And Weyland really did want immortality/medical benefits from it...The Hammerpede has an interesting trait that allows it to regenerate its own head. David found out he's not immortal, because he doesn't possess this ability, he has to rely on Shaw to re-attach his head..

some interesting points made about the Engineer and Fifield...

We do not know the full reason for the Space Jockey suit....

We see the Engineer could breath outside on LV 223, we do not know for how long, Ford said that a Human would not last more then few minutes in the atmospheric conditions outside.

While yes the Engineer may have better lungs, i also think maybe the Bio Suit and its Gills near the neck may also play a part to how he could survive on LV 223 for longer periods than we can.

There is no proof for or against how long the Engineers can survive outside.

The air inside the temple is clean and breathble for Humans and again as Ford states is actually cleaner and healthier than Earth.

This enviroment is not needed for the Xenomorph or its DNA related Organisms, we have to assume that as Fifield DNA is altered he can survive the hostile LV 223 atmosphere because his DNA is changed and thus he no longer needs the Blood and Oxygen respetory system we use.

There must be a reason for why that outpost can support Human Life, there must be a reason for the Clues left by Engineers,

1) was it a invitation? for when we are ready but we was never ready and infact we turned out in a way that offended the Engineers, so they turned a potential Garden of Eden for us to become a Hell.

2) Was they simply showing this is where we come to visit you from, without knowing we would then want to get to LV 223, as the Engineers never intended and never thought we could be able to travel to LV 223. But maybe they Terraformed it so some of us could be taken there to conducts tests and upgrades on us.

3) Was a fraction trying to warn us of the horrors on LV 223 and that this place is where these Engineers may be trying to take some of us to to conduct experiments etc on.

I like the ideas you guys have posted, hope you don't mind if I add something :) For me its either the space jockeys created the aliens or they took one from the alien home world to experiment on. I think I saw from a comic book about the space jockeys had a civil war and one side created the aliens to end that war but it brought the end of their empire. I think the space jockeys we see in prometheus are a splinter group that might have created a new weapon for us because I know its not said but what if weyland did get his hands on xenomorphs and this splinter group knows that we will weaponize them in the same way they did. I'm going to say the the splinter group space jockeys I'm talking about are the ones that did not create the xenomorphs and came up with a new weapon to get back at the other space jocky group who did. If that is so then that can explain why the ones we see on LV223 had problems controlling their own experiments. As far as weyland or the company lol in aliens and alien 3, I think they already had a queen. Ripley and her crew that went to LV426 the first time I think made the company travel there to capture the the alien queen that came out of that space jockey. I know we only know that an alien came out of the space jockey and if it even was still in that ship or traveled on the planet. You can look at aliens and alien 3 as a distraction the company made to further their goal on who knows how many planets or space stations they must have filled with their xenomorphs.
