MemberOvomorphMay-26-2012 2:09 PMThis is a legitimate question for the members of the community who know more about genetics than I do. How long ago would the Engineers have had to have tampered with our genetics (specifically with those of homo sapiens sapiens), for us to not be able to detect it (at the projected point in the future when this mission is occurring)? Or, will this be part of the story? Will Holloway hold up some slide that shows actual tampering?
One of the reasons that I bring this up is that I DO find the ancient aliens theory(ies) somewhat charming, but it does seem that science should now or soon in the future be able to debunk or prove it one way or the other. Or, would intentional tempering (modifications to the genome) be undetectable? If undetectable, why?

MemberOvomorphMay-26-2012 2:35 PMIt seems that your question presumes that we would be able to detect historic, "tampering".
I don't believe it's the case that we would necessarily be able to detect historic, "tampering" - and I believe that is likely because we are still quite unclear as to how it is DNA came to be, in the first place.
I think, perhaps, one of the propositions of this film - and ideas like it - is that the introduction of DNA, itself, in the first case, was the, "tampering"?

MemberOvomorphMay-26-2012 2:37 PMExposing the body to radiation can affect humans. I am not sure if the skeleton that remain for years can show signs of it. But considering the war which wiped out the odd humans which were deformed or showed the first change, we have no means of figuring out that there was any tampering to begin with. Cognitive level tampering is hard to figure out but physical changes can be traced provided that the branching between the ancestors maintained with no missing links. This is again my theory.

And *nothing* since then to distinguish us from the Neanderthals, etc...??

MemberOvomorphMay-26-2012 3:52 PMman, there's a video on youtube about speculation of our extraterrewstrial origins...
Something like "you know noyhing about" or whatever. But it's very good at explaining the DNA thing

MemberOvomorphMay-26-2012 4:06 PMYeah, how would you be able to know?
Even then, scientists would only be guessing.
And even then, the theory would probably change a hundred years from now.

Could a nice STAFF member please move this to spoilers so that we can talk about the Dettifoss implications in here?
That wasn't my original intent, but it seems that that may be unavoidable...
Thx.

no... it's a 1h + video of a dude explaining why the homo sapiens can not be a natural part of the world. Man, I forgot it's title....

MemberOvomorphMay-26-2012 5:00 PMGenetic tampering might look like something else...

I'm familiar with Pye’s assertions in general, but haven't seen this whole thing, so I'm going to watch it. Thx. It's very long, but I don't want to comment on it without hearing what he as to say in full.
@Wintermute—
Am looking forward to your article after that.
But, my fundamental question is, "Is there a way, in fact, to detect any "tampering" or would it just show up as a mutation?"

While we are stirring this pot, we might as well add in this ingredient (17 minutes).

Yeah... Pye is clearly smart and very "science-y" but I mean that in a "truthiness" kind of way. The conspiracy vibe from him is quite a turn-for me, yet, Elaine Morgan has some of that in her opposition to the establishment, and she really IS a scientist.
My question is fundamentally, can/could we (our science) detect a "manipulation" vs. a "normal mutation"?
