so far, PROMETHEUS has failed to disappoint me... until today, seeing that moronic looking "power loader / pulse rifle" is not something i was hoping to EVER see on ANY Weyland PROMETHEUS official related sites, but for whatever reasons it is on the Weyland site (UGH) if this is Scott's doing, therein lies the germ of my TRUE disappointment... however, if this is just "Fox" and their bullshit attempts to tie in Cameron's poorly conceived / executed xerox copy of ALIEN, then it softens this blow of stupidity in any case, i will try my best to not let this crap ruin my anticipation of PROMETHEUS, and all that it has promised so far in any case - - MUTHURFUCKER...

Come on .... is a gentlemen reference to a friend ...they always praise each other ... and ....we love Aliens . Anyway that will not change a bit what Prometheus is .

I entirely agree shardy, but look at it this way...If that's the extent of the tie-in...we're both cryin' over spilt milk.......look on the bright side....There's so much more to 'Prometheus', obviously, and if that's all there is to fuss about, we have nothing to worry about....

Honestly I can't see where the problem is with a bit of flavour from the other movies. The power loader, the pulse rifles, the atmospheric processors and the correctional facilities add just a bit of human background, but there is no emphasis on them. A Queen, a digitigrade alien or a bloody Newborn, on the other hand, would be disappointing, but we are not going to see them. (I hope)
Ridley Scott will eventually tell us how the Queen was born. Right now we have the Deacon; coming soon the Mercury, the May and the Taylor.

I hear you Shardy, But it is what it is... Like it or not, if Ridley Scott ever tried to get into a pissing war with Fox and James Cameron, he would literally have his ass handed to him while he was thrown backwards through the board room door. Cameron is now a self-made multi-BILLIONAIRE, and he has literally made BILLIONS for Fox... Fluckkk...AVATAR alone has surpassed more than 2 BILLION GROSS... and AVATAR 2 is EXPECTED to rake in even more BILLIONS! Scott has absolutely no choice but to keep his mouth shut and tow the line. Again, Im not saying I like that... But it is what it is.

Spilt milk is what broke Aerosmith up during the late seventies. Its some powerful s**t.

MemberOvomorphApr-26-2012 5:38 PM
First Rdiley praised Avatar ...then Cameron did say the best about Ridley and the anticipation for Prometheus .... now they pay an homage to aliens and as Noxword say its just "background " . It not a war ..its the exact opposite . Its love :pppp

Prometheus should tie into the Alien Universe. "Building Better Worlds" was from Aliens as well (directors cut). It's all good!

Hahahahaha You could almost put together a timeline that would do nothing but chronicle the evolution of Lucas' neck waddle. But on a more serious note... Those two literally bent Harrison Ford over a pinball machine in that Crystal Skunk movie !! A pinball machine I tellz yah !! : P

Shardy Aliens bashing again (sigh) - Im starting to think it's an age thing. Allot of the older fans I think, had polarized their scifi taste by the time Aliens was released. Aliens is cannon, and without it we would not be here having this conversation and, Prometheus would not exist. There is nothing "moronic" about pulse rifles or power loaders. I actually hope they DO NOT feature in this movie, but if you cant see the amazing industrial and conceptual design that was applied to these props, then you have no imagination.

It's just digital images on a marketing website. What makes anyone think they'll see a power-loader, or any other "Aliens" accoutrements in the movie?

MemberOvomorphApr-26-2012 6:15 PM
I just can't get myself so worked up about one minor detail of a movie. Aliens is canon, so what? It's been canon for going on three decades. Why is not changing that fact so shocking/upsetting to anyone?

shardy

MemberOvomorphApr-26-2012 6:23 PM
@Enderwiggin: i'm going to put this in terms that you (possibly) can understand, although (not likely), given your defensive posturing for all things " Aliens " i saw "Aliens" first run in the theater back in 1986, i was super-excited to see what cool new events would unfold after seeing it the first time, i thought it was a decent take on the events that ALIEN left on, however, while waiting in line for the second showing (i saw it back-to-back on opening day) the realization of what a cheap carbon copy of ALIEN it turned out to be began to set in, in an all too palpable way "Aliens" has not aged well at all, Spike TV aired it a little while back, and i decided to re-watch it for nostalgia sake, to see if my stance on such a predicable film could be challenged sadly, after about half way thru the film, i found myself wanting to change the channel, and that is what i did if you want to discuss what you feel is a another "canon", then PLEASE, go do that, start your own thread praising that shit if you are so bored with my bashing, then way even bother acknowledging this thread...? speaking of all things moronic - - i'd say you just validated my point

MemberOvomorphApr-26-2012 6:26 PM
Okay... who hasn't been paying attention? This doesn't take place THAT far in the future. Which means that some "phaser" or other type of weapon definitely wouldn't make sense. That, and if anybody thinks FOX is in charge here ... they aren't living in the real world. And finally, anything LESS than an "R" rating would hurt sales in this case. This was NEVER meant to be a kiddie flick . From the very start Ridley had every intention to make this a very graphic and mature story. Anything less than an "R" rating would diminish that exponentially. Regards from sanity, David 7

OK, just one relatively minor clarification... Its actually NOT the "Pulse" rifle from Aliens but something a little different, the "STORM". However, I do think this thing is going to figure into the plot somehow. I have mentioned this a couple times in various threads going back sometime now. Its like the literally pack the timeline full of the development of this thing with a couple notations that really stand out for me.... Among the intial patent development, they go on to development new special Ammo that can function in ANY atmosphere including Complete VACUUM conditions. I think this alone is VERY TELLING and almost telegraphing something that will happen in Prometheus. They also develop new tracking and sighting instruments that can acquire and TRACK targets over great ranges and make completely automated adustments on the fly! THE CURE FOR CANCER is like mentioned ONCE in the timeline! Yet this new weapon and all its tweeks and auxilliary attachements gets the nod 6 or 7 times in the Weyland Timline. There HAS to be a reason for this that is directly RELATED to Prometheus IMO.

MemberOvomorphApr-26-2012 6:36 PM
@CandaPhil: to me, that looks looks like a pulse rifle with a few things added to it, to make it look less compact, but overall, that is definitely a nod to all things Cameron the sidearms that are featured in PROMETHEUS look very sleek, they also emit some kind of blue / gas-like smoke when the gun is discharged you can see / hear it more clearly in the latest featurette

@ Shardy I am ABSOLUTELY not getting into an Alien vs Aliens debate, I grew weary of that a long time ago - surprised you haven't. I also am not going to start trowing insults. It just seems to me that all the things you criticize in Aliens are the things that set it apart from the first film. Meaning you chastise it for being similar and being original at the same time. Makes no sense. The original point I was trying to make is regarding your reference to the "moronic" power loader. That sir, is an icon of science fiction and will be remembered with the same affection as Maschinenmensch and Robbie the Robot. And you would do well to remember it.

MemberOvomorphApr-26-2012 6:38 PM
I don't think "Aliens" has aged nearly as well as the original.....but this isn't a Cameron film, and we won't have to suffer through any stereotypical "grunt" dialog or cringeworthy "get away from her, you bitch" crowd-pleasing anthropomorphisms. Relax, it's gonna be OK. At least on the blu-ray, this movie is going to be awesome in every way. if it isn't, please feel free to tear me a new one after you've seen it.

Further... just somemore info just as an fyi... The "Storm" clearly seems to be a movie mockup based on an old Thompson SMG (which in case you were not aware is exactly how they created the PULSE rifle for Aliens). However, some obvious differences on first glance are... The "Storm" retains the original FULL LENGTH of the Thompson barrel. (The Aliens Pulse barrel is cut off right after the grenade launcher) The "Storm" also has the automated targeted sight mounted on it. This device alone receives a couple of notations in Weylands timeline. The Aliens Pulse rifle had NO special tracking of any kind and NO automated sight. Just a simple old style iron sight. Again, I just think there are too many mentions of what would seem to be a trivial piece of gear in the Prometheus Weyland timeline.

@Enderwiggin: you clearly, clearly, CLEARLY don't see the forest thru the trees in regards to what i so obviously in plain view of most of us in regards to what " Aliens " is to ALIEN you stated in your initial post on this thread that: "Aliens is cannon, and without it we would not be here having this conversation and, Prometheus would not exist." like...seriously...?!? again, since you are bored with my " Aliens " bashing, then why bother with me, or my opnions...? understand...?

@shardy you sound like a whiney 6 year old girl. Aliens was not a carbon copy of Alien. If it were we'd have more people creeping down corridors getting picked off one by one, ya know, like Alien 3. Aliens was and is an action film. fecking get over it

MemberOvomorphApr-26-2012 7:40 PM
Wow...hostile in here. Personally, I like Aliens but it is by no means a perfect film. That's not the issue here though. The power loader and pulse rifle are icons of science fiction, regardless of what movie they came from, or if you liked it or not. They were awesome ideas!

shardy

MemberOvomorphApr-26-2012 7:44 PM
@colonelangus: with a screen name like that, you are the last person to be doling out what you feel is mature behavior

MemberOvomorphApr-26-2012 7:55 PM
@colonelangus.......agrue the merits of your disagreement....you're the one who's coming off whiney....go after the idea, not the member...if you can't do that, then don't bother posting Same goes for everyone else... @colonelangus.....'Aliens' IS a total plot rip from the first film.....travelers in space (marines this time) investigate a deserted complex (the derelict the 1st time), only to find themselves attacked by the alien species, to be unable to escape them, have to improvise a means to defend themselves, plan to use a shuttle for escape (Narcissus the 1st time, drop ship the 2nd), confront the alien (in this case, the queen), escape the exploding atmospheric processor (or Nostromo the 1st time), escape by the skin of their teeth only to have the alien hitch a ride (this time, the queen), have a battle to the death on board the escape vessel and blow (in both cases) the alien out the airlock (which, is ridiculous and unrealistic in the 2nd, because who really believes Ripley would have the strength to pull herself out of an open airlock and do so with no oxygen to breathe, because.....oh, wait.....the vacuum of space would have instantaneously depressurized the Sulaco's loading bay and completely removed every last molecule of air....KILLING EVERYONE except Bishop)......so there.....there's that.

@craigamore: laying it down with a correct synopsis...! i did that a while back, but some folks on here just can't handle the obvious facts. and blame age / or general stupidity to defend their loves of all things "Cameron / Aliens" (yaaaaaaawn) in any case, i hope your initial assessment of the rifle / p-loader are correct, and the only time we will see them is in the brief viral campaign, and nothing else thanx for havin' my back craigamore!

@artyoh I think you have nailed this. @shardy I can see where you might be coming from. Personally, I have always appreciated Aliens and admired and respected Cameron's undoubted innovations - if only from a stylistic point of view: a follow-up to Alien could easily have been formulaic garbage in someone else's hand: and it was not. Yet, for me, Aliens has always been something very much, "other" - and far removed from what Alien was really about - but, most significantly, it set us down a road of absolute redundancy from what Alien actually was, that ended with the xenomorph in Disneyland? That's not Cameron's no anyone's, "fault", except The Man/Fox - (if it a matter of "fault", not Commerce, at all)- but that doesn't stop it jarring with me and I don't need or want to see close associations with it in Prometheus for those reasons. That's just a matter of taste, now - it's canon: The End. That said: if there are associations I doubt they will be close - I think others may have called it correctly and this is either some Fox tie-in stuff or professional acknowledgement between Directors to join hands across the Works - which is actually really nice. Furthermore, if they are used, Ridley will do something entirely different with them. You obviously know that, you just seem to be raising your hand and expressing your discomfort with the association and the reason for it while also saying that you'll set it aside. Fair enough - I don't see any foul. Personally, all I'm going to do is put these interesting things to the back of my mind unless they play a significant part in the Story, which I doubt.
