Lead actress in Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant recently sat down with BBC One's The One Show last night to discuss her role in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but also briefly touched on her upcoming role in Alien: Covenant.

During the interview which you can watch below (at about 27 mins in), Waterston explains how Ridley Scott enjoys creating a genuinely scary environment on-set, to elicit real fear and emotion from the actors. In one such instance, she recalls one scene where she was being chased by "enormous Aliens" while attempting to get away in a cumbersome suit.

I was sort of running towards the trouble in Fantastic Beasts, whereas in Alien I’m running from it. Ridley is a little sadistic. He likes it to feel pretty scary on set. There were days when there were really enormous Aliens chasing me and I was in a cumbersome spacesuit.

Waterston is a relatively tall woman, so for her to describe the Aliens as enormous means they truly will be quite large. We know there will be more than one form of Alien unleashed in Covenant - one referred to as Neomorphs and at least one, possible two more. Just how large these Neomorphs will be we're unsure of.

The unused Ultramorph, from Ridley Scott's Prometheus concepts will unfortunately not be making an appearance in Alien: Covenant.

The future of Alien

The Alien franchise is taking a dramatic turn at 20th Century Studios, now owned by Disney. Currently there are two major Alien projects in development - a new Alien TV series by Noah Hawley and a new, stand-alone Alien movie being directed by Fede Alvarez. Both of which will be taking the franchise in a new direction - moving away from the Alien prequel direction Ridley Scott set out to pursue back in 2012.

Something Real

CHRIS PICARD - How excellent! I wonder what size these "enormous" Aliens actually are? This is so very exciting! :)

Amazing!

Indeed, I'm curious just how enormous these Aliens will be. I wonder how the sizes of them compare between the Neomorphs and the Xenomorph.

So freaking stoked! Imagining her struggling to get away in a ***bersome spacesuit...

As as there are traditional Xenomorphs mixed in there with the new ones, I'm happy. I wonder how big these new bugs will be?

I watched that last night, I was hoping she would touch upon Covenant. Wonder where the space-suited scenes are set? What could be more terrifying than the MORBs we already know....freakin' enormous MORBS! ;)

Bring it on!

"There were days when there were really enormous Aliens chasing me and I was in a ***bersome spacesuit."

I wonder is this going to take place in space or on the Engineer planet inside the ship.

And by the word enormous, the xenomorphs are usually over 7' tall, bigger than humans.

Something is telling me that the Neomorphs might be much bigger than the classic xenos.

The beluga-xenomorph from Jon Spaiht's screenplay that the Neomorph is probably based on, in concept art seems really big by comparison to human.

Good point! That concept art alone shows a creature likely closer to 9-10' tall. I have a feeling this film is genuinely going to scare the s#!t out of us.

@Dark Nebula

I believe that image was one of the alternative Ultramorph designs, we have to remember the Term Ultramorph was used as far as the Concept for those Drafts as what Ultimately was the Result of a Infected Engineer to produce a Organism with Xeno DNA that was different and Huge due to the Host being 12-15ft Tall.

There was a number of different designs that looked different some like that image you posted and others more closer to the Xenomorph or Necronom IV.

But i think the Ultra was purely to describe the Form of Xeno that would come from a Engineer Host.... which was later what the Deacon was as they changed Ultramorph to Deacon.

When they made this change, they had a lot of work on the Deacon that varied too.

@Chris

I am not sure when anything was mentioned officially to say they are not using the Prometheus Ultramorph, or that they was going to use it officially to start with, i think we have to bare in mind also what design of Ultramorph if what you put is true that will not be returning.

i think the potential to see more than One Monster is High, and at least One has to be similar to the Xenomorph and the more Necronom IV looking Ultramorphs are more Xenomorph than some of the other concepts we saw for Prometheus.

We cant be sure what designs they would be using but at the very least i think we can safely Assume that one design would be closer to the Xenomorph.

DeaconMember10416 XPNov-16-2016 2:38 PM

As far as ENORMOUS goes i think thats down to interpretation of Miss Waterson.

What one person would consider say Small, may be different to another persons.

But safe to Assume they are Larger than a Human.

In the Alien Franchise the Status Quo for the Xeno was 7-8ft Tall and the Queens as 16-18ft.   Certainly a Queen sized Organism would be considered ENORMOUS but thats not to say we see some kind of Queen (although we do see Eggs).

But you could say that 8ft tall would be considered ENORMOUS too depends on the person.... in context to what i would call Enormous even if it was to describe a encounter with i dont know.... Big Foot,  a Humanoid Alien that tried to abduct me.... or a Werewolf...

Enormous to me would be something 12-15ft Tall, but then we cant be sure what ENORMOUS would be to Katherine.

I think also we have to ask how do these Enormous Aliens come to be.... if we follow the Alien Franchise Status Quo then we see the Xenomorph takes on traits of its Host and its reflected in its size.... and we see that the Host stands about 70% the size of the Adult Xeno that is Gestated inside them.

The exception is the Queen, it was Alien 3 and Alien R that shows a Queen is born the same way via a Embryo only a Queen Grows to over 2X the size of the Xenomorph and so the Host of a Queen is about 1/3rd the size of the Gestated Adult Queen.

So in terms of the Franchise so far, the way we have kind of been shown to get something Enormous is via

1) Queen Organism

2) Larger Host (Engineer).

But we dont know yet how many Monsters we shall see only that we would get at least One that has similar Cycle and Design to the 1979 Alien.

I find it hard to see how Spore Particles can lead to just ONE Chest/Neck/Back Buster that grows to 15ft plus however...

That is disappointing that the Ultramorph won’t be in it but maybe they will have something similar to it. Maybe they say that they won’t have it but then when we watch the movie we will see something similar to it? She said something about a huge alien so it makes sense if there will be something that reminds about it in some way. The reason why they say that is because they don’t want to spoil it, I don’t know.

As far as the sizes of the Neomorph, Xenos, and the large monster I think that it could be alright if there would be one that is smaller but still dangerous and another that is much larger compared to the Xenos. There are so many ways that they can develop this.

DeaconMember10416 XPNov-17-2016 4:51 PM

I would not read to much into the Ultramorph wont appear... or Neomorph comments...

Right now i dont think there has been any official claim of Neomorphs or not having or having Ultramorphs

Fassbender may have just had a slip of the tongue.

We have to look at the meaning... and Neo means New, or Young and this could apply to the Chest Buster Scene in Alien where Fassbender mentioned Neomorph....

But then it could apply to Alien Covenant but then it depends how we interpret Neo

Young: Which implies maybe a earlier Organism that leads to the Xeno.

New: Which would imply something newer than the Xeno and Deacon etc.

The same goes for Ultramorph...

I think there was 5-6 designs for the Alien Prequel that became Prometheus, half of them looked very less Bio-Mechanical than even the Deacon, and Half looked more Bio-Mechanical but not quite as much as the 1979 Xeno.

The Term Ultra-Morph was to indicate a work in progress name for what ultimately would Chest Bust from the Engineer to give us a even Bigger Xeno related Organism, potentially standing 16-20 Foot instead of the Regular Xeno-Morph 7-8ft tall.

If its true but i have not found any official acknowledgement that the Ultramorph design (which is varied) will or will not appear.

Maybe it could imply that we wont see any Engineer Host Organisms... and only ones that come from other means of Humans.

DeaconMember10416 XPNov-17-2016 4:58 PM

Right now we have those leaked photos, which are maybe not officially released.... or maybe a tease/red herring?

The only official things we have been told are...

There would be a Egg/Face Huger/Chest Buster and Big Guy..which to me means that potentially the Face Huger and Eggs we have seen will appear.

The Big Guy? who knows what this would look like, but Katherine Waterston does mention something Big!

We have seen that officially released pair of Hands being worked on, and i would say that is part of a Monster that is 100% in the Movie, and Tagged where it all begins to me shows us its connected to what Ridley was saying.

It does not look as Bio-Mechanical as the 1979 or 1986 Xenomorphs though.... but this movie is to show us in a way HOW it becomes Bio-Mechanical.

I think maybe some of those Photos, and the Art Departments Clothing that featured the Classic Face Huger and Xeno and the Necronom 4 Clapper Board... could all be a bit of a Red Herring.

People would be expecting the Xenomorph... but i think they will get something a bit different, i dont think Alien Covenant will answer Alien at all, only in the way Prometheus started to, but in a less ambiguous way and the AC Monsters will be more closer to the Alien one, than Prometheus ones were.

I think this movie will start to answer it... but leave us on a Cliff Hanger that will lead to another movie to connect the dots.

When they say the 'Ultramorph' won't be featured, I hope they mean the giant Alien seen in the concept art for Prometheus and not the albino blind alien. I'm hoping they keep that, it is absolutely nightmarish.

Sounds good and I am looking forward to this, with cautious anticipation.
