MemberChestbursterDec-13-2017 4:52 PMA few weeks ago i made a stoned decision to buy the prequel novel and totally forgot about it. It arrived today, i opened it and thought to myself is it worth going through this story if it has ZERO links to anything interesting suggested in both Prometheus and A:C.
A few scraps is fine i know i not getting some revelations that Bransons death was murder, the Xeno has been to Earth prior or other higher hopes like the mention of an Engineer. Just half a sentence would do. i am easy pleased.
that said i will probably read after Christmas when i have time rather than cancel a whole day of my life to indulge. oh i wish i could. well i can but would consider it a potential let down.
thoughts ?

MemberTrilobiteDec-13-2017 4:56 PMI read the first three or chapters and got busy with other things. I think it is pretty good and worth the time if you have it. I am not the bookworm I would like to be lol!

MemberDeaconDec-14-2017 1:36 AMI have yet to read it, but it only has a dream of Xenomorph like Creatures but then they could be something different and not Xenomorphs...
Mainly the Book is about the Covenant Mission prior to departure and how a group of people want to sabotage the Mission, because they feel Mankind Sending out Missions to other Star Systems could Attract interest from other ALIEN Species and end up with them coming to Earth... So the point is, if we start to explore deep space and awaken or come across a Alien Race, what if they are not Benevolent, and then come to Earth.
So this group attempt to Sabotage the Covenant Mission in a number of ways.
As far as i am aware it does not cover much about the Company or its Origins, and it mainly features Lope and Rosenthal as they prevent those wishing to sabotage the Covenant Mission from doing so.
This book has to have been collaborated with RS and FOX and i feel it sets some seeds for where the next movie will take us. which i planned to debate in another post before, but i never got round to it...
Basically the Hubris of the Engineers in Prometheus was they was right to want to Destroy Mankind, because had they succeeded then we would never have got to LV-223 or Created David and the Destruction that follows... this is the Good Reason the Engineers wanted to Destroy us... they Feared this could happen.
And so i feel the Hubris well fears of the Saboteurs in the Origins Novel will Eco back in RS Plans for the Franchise his 6 Movie, War of the Worlds which cant really work unless ALIEN 3 on wards or maybe even ALIENS are taken from Canon. This being that Mankinds Exploration of the Covenant Ship had led to them stopping off to that Signal and then going to find David..... and even prior to that, even with the Prometheus mission, these events all lead to the Engineers Returning to discover what happened on Planet 4 and if they was not aware of Mankind, or what level of Technology we could reach once they abandoned us... they surely KNOW NOW and they would either now Realize they Should have Destroyed us... OR that they HAVE to DESTROY US so i think it sets up that eventually indeed those who was against the Covenant Mission and indeed Mankinds Persuit of Exploring Deep Space for the Fear of Attracting Alien Races... could well have their Fears Confirmed.

MemberChestbursterDec-14-2017 5:31 AMDK - i will give it a go . u r right in my own time ;)
BD - Now there has to be a reason for this book other than ADF wanted a 2 book deal - so BigDave i agree it could be to plant a few seeds to reinforce the story later. Being that there would of been a thousand more interesting ideas thrown around than what we have, So maybe you on point with the whole idea that a group of people would sabotage the mission as they believe it could lead to visitation. Then this point plants a seed for an invasion in the Alien franchise.
I would like to speculate that this race is not the Engineers or Xeno, it could be the new "exciting" player that comes into the game. Reports a few weeks/months ago suggested FOX might mix things up but i forgot the exact quote.

MemberPraetorianDec-14-2017 7:47 AMEveryone who has complained about the lack of an alien, Dr. Shaw, David, or the Engineers has a legitimate gripe sherris.
I looked for all those things and was disappointed for a moment when I found they were not there but the book has a great second half and overall covers areas not touched on before. There is a time in the Alien story before any humans at large had any idea of the xenomorph...this book covers that time.
I enjoyed the book once I finished it. The character development of Rosenthal and Lope enriched what I saw of them in Alien: Covenant, as well as, what is written of Daniels. The main take away of the book is that you are given a glimpse Earth before the Covenant mission left and the motivations of those in support of the mission and others willing to die to keep the mission from happening at all. Earth is polluted, overpopulated, and saturated with amazing robotic technology that is both a benefit and a curse.
Like the book title says.."Origins"....the hospital where Ellen Ripley was born was not overrun by xenomorphs so we can all assume that there is a part of the story that doesn't have a teeth-capped pipe punching into someone's forehead.

MemberChestbursterDec-15-2017 12:17 PMHey DK - I would be ok with that man !! An open universe with many beings (or at least another 1) could only spark interest. I just waiting on confirmation. would we be informed if they scrapped the idea do you think or just hear nothing ??
Also would you want a sci-fi horror at an 18 rating.
Or go big budget and have Akien toys in Disney shops. Say 12 Cert.
One may give us entertainment watering down the original.
The 18, if unsuccessful could kill the franchise.
Many purists would scoff at toning down but it could be that or nothing. im saying something MIGHT be better than nothing

MemberTrilobiteDec-15-2017 3:53 PMThe rating may be different. People are more jaded now it seems. No one seems scared about gore. It's something to consider. I think it would be ok as long as no human genitalia or bare female chests are not shown. I am not sure Disney would be down with that.

MemberDeaconDec-16-2017 8:36 PM"I would like to speculate that this race is not the Engineers or Xeno, it could be the new "exciting" player"
Who knows its a possibility, and i do think the book puts in a few hints to the fears mankind could have regarding poking around in Space, its a Genuine True Fear some here in Reality have such as the SETI Program and us bombarding Space with signals. In case we attract Aliens and how can we tell how they would react.
I have not read the book yet, so thanks Ingeniero for some more information, i know roughly what the book is about, and indeed you really can see what the OUTCOME is from Alien Resurrection as far as what Paris looks like, its interesting you mention that Complex Machines are on the UP... this is something that i think will actually become FACT as time goes on and we Advance, then Technology will become even more important replacing many Chores and Tasks that would require Manual Labor. I can almost for certain see a Future with Transport being mainly controlled by AI to avoid Human Error and the like. And i expect AI and Machinery to engulf more of our Workload in the next 50 years than the last 50.
So when RS is looking at AI for the next movie, in part it could touch upon the need to so desperately leave a World that is now so reliant on Technology. And the Big Theme RS appears to be looking at is pretty much similar to what the Matrix and Terminator etc have shown... and that is ONCE AI evolves to think of itself as Sentient and should have free will/rights as a Human has... Once AI evolves to feel why should it be contained by how our intentions are for it... TO SERVE and so as Stephen Hawkings Even Warned, Once this CAT is out of the BAG it could become VERY Dangerous
I think there is a lot we can read between the supple things in the last TWO movies and Virals and Marketing that Many Miss.... and OVERLOOK i think indeed the Fear of Finding other Life and what its intentions could be in the Book, i feel will be shown to be a great Foresight by those who wished to Sabotage the Covenant.

MemberDeaconDec-16-2017 9:00 PMAs for the Certification's and Future of Franchise...
Joke all we can.... i think with Disney there is far greater a chance of a AVP3/Reboot if Disney feel they can make Money from the Movie and Merchandise (this is the Big One $$$$) then dont rule out a AVP... i just hope if they do so, its done in a way where it will be open to personal choice for another AVP to be Canon or not.... But if done right i think a AVP could make them Money.. if they follow the Plot/Time-line of the Games/Comics and not the Previous movie attempts.
On to the Certification issue...
Having watched the New Star Wars movie, i do fear that Disney will aim any future Alien movies do not purely aim for the 15 year old's plus... So i think we wont see any 18 Rated Alien movies again.
I think Disney will want to open the Movies to more potential Audience and so i think Alien Covenant will be about as Gory as we are going to get.... I also think the Bad Language will be Toned down quite a bit
And so i expect Future movies to be Cert 15 with some maybe coming in at 13
They know kids aged between 12-16 are going to find the Franchise good and i am sure many a 12-15 year old enjoy the old movies even though its a Taboo because they are not old enough.... i mean how many under 18 year olds and especially 12-17 years are not going to own/play the AVP Games, Alien Isolation etc.
But getting them into the Cinema is hard so i think Disney could market the future movies aimed at 13-15 year old Certification's to open up a bigger BOX Office and then Video Games aged 15 or 18 for more Horror and Gore, knowing that exposure of movies to a 13-15 audience will mean they will (get someone else) to get them the higher content rated games... but then also the Merchandise..
I think those worrying about these movies being made for kids, need to not worry as far as the very young, but i think Disney will Tone down any Nudity and Foul Language for certain and Gore to get the Franchise to a Cert 15 UK and then what ever the equivalent in other countries would be.
I will lastly add as years go by people become more used to Language and Violence and Gore, if we look at some movies that came out the last 5 years, they would get different Certification if they came out in the 70's and 80's and likewise vice versa.
I mean how much more Adult Related is ALIENS or PREDATOR compared to the AVP movies or Predators?
I think most of the Alien Series if they had only came out recently would certainly fit within a Cert 15 so i guess the Franchise wont be going for the children who want soft toys etc... but to expect maybe similar to what Prometheus and Predators kind of offered

MemberChestbursterDec-17-2017 10:08 AMYes BigDave, i think disney are clever enough to ride the line between giving the majority what they want and squeeze it into a 13. I think 15 may be too brave, merchandise considered. I think the power of disney entering a show for classification could easily have the power to get granted a 13 cutting it as close as is legally possible. They will know exactly how far the edge is.
its disney. i think they will try their best as they do everything with $$$$ in it.

MemberDeaconDec-17-2017 4:23 PMThis is the BIG Concern...
I dont think Disney are going to make movies that will be open to be viewed by under 13 year olds, i mean if we look at ALIENS i am pretty sure, if we reduce the Language and Odd Sexual innuendos (majority is in the Arcturian Poontang Scene Hudson vs Vasquez Banter) Removed the Ripley Chest Buster Scene and maybe the other and cut the Foul Language then ALIENS would be a easy Cert 12 leave the Chest Busters in and i think it could push a Cert 13, i would say that ALIENS as of today based on content would pass a Cert 15 if not it would only have to make minor cuts.
So i think if Disney Push for a Cert 15 Franchise i think content wise we wont miss the odd Nudity or Swearing but then even some old Cert 15 UK movies have a fair bit of Bad Language and Partial Nudity. Take Alien Covenant i feel if this movie was out in the 80's it would have got a Cert 18
The Concern comes if they try and push a Age 13.... I think a LARGE Problem with Classifications is the differences between countries i think the main ones do revolve and adopt either the USA System or UK
The UK the ones that are relevant are.
12A Under 12's can watch if accompanied by a Adult who feels the movie is suitable
12 You have to be over 12 years old
15 You have to be over 15 years old
18 You have to be over 18 years old
The USA relative System is
PG-13 which is not advice for under 13's and so its kind of standing the line of a UK 12A and 12
R which restricts those under 17 to have to be accompanied by a Adult this stands the line between a UK 15 and 18 in terms of restricted content
NC-17 Which means no under 17's can view the movie, this is pretty much close to a UK 18
I feel the System causes Problems for Movie producers as they will always look at the USA System so when they wish to make a Movie with Gore, Bad Language and Nudity or what ever.. a R basically treads the line between a UK 15 and 18 but is open to those under 15 in the USA, so younger Teens could be Targeted by a Movie with a R rating but then when they try and class if for UK they then need to see if this is a lesser content movie so a 12 or 15, or is it a 15
The Problem is similar with the NC-17 but not as bad to deal with.
I think we need a more UNIVERSAL System when we are dealing with anything above PG and so a
13A/PG-13 would be more suited to replace the UK 12/12A
15 would be a better replacement for the R/NC-17
18 would in effect replace the NC-17
I think this system is better which is the UK one but replace the 12/12A by implementing a additional year to it and then movies that would be viewed by 12 years old that are not to bad could fit with PG or sorry guys you just have to wait to be a Teenager... Not that it effects many 12-13 year olds as i doubt taking a 12 year old to watch a 13 movie would be pulled over on that difference lol (who could tell?)
THE POINT TO THIS?
Sadly Hollywood Revolves around the USA System and with Disney in charge now, i think they would be a bit reluctant to push a R Franchise and so its likely the ALIEN Franchise will become a PG-13 which means stuff that could be expected for over 13 year olds would have to GO... which could mean if its Pushing the Boundaries of a PG-13 then the UK and a lot of the World would have to adopt a 15 instead...
So unfairly the USA get to see a movie 2 years younger than most of the World... oh well i guess it makes up for how they cant Drink and Gamble until 21 ;)
