

I LOVE David as he's so....smoothly evil.
BUT, I prefer HAL, he wasn't malicious, he was confused by conflicted order sets.

Yeah, for HAL ir was direct, like solving a simple mechanical issue. No maliciousness on his part, he just did what he perceived to be the proper course of action in problem-solving...and killed all but one of the crew with machine-efficiency.
David though, I sense there's some part of him that enjoys it, that he feels a sense of validated-superiority when he metes out death, especially if he can do so in a way that he feels people should see coming, yet don't.
