No need to intruduce gay couples because Weyland is obviously a closeted gay who despises females (his daughter and every single Alien franchise heroine) and would only produce male robots who look like Michael Fassbender (his big crush)

Welcome aboard and indeed its very interesting for Ridley Scott to go this route and i cant see any reason why not, and its nice to see him explore this possibility.... I know some dont see the point in having Same Sex Couples Especially Male on a Colony Ship.

But a Real Life Colony Mission would be doing more than just Sex and Reproducing you would need Specialists in every department and if that means a Team of 10 Good Medical Staff to see to 2000 colonists it should not matter if say half are Same Sex Couples, because having a Extra say 5 Medical Staff is more important than say Reducing the Reproducing Couples from 1000 down to 997 ;)

This is where Lope and Hallet come in, their main responsibility is initial Security for the Mission.  Even if Half the Ship was Same Sex does not mean they could no complete their mission.

They would need Specialist in every field required to set up a Colony and besides if there are say 50 Lesbian and 50 Gay Couples this does not mean thats 200 Colonists who wont be making any Babies..

As surely they would have Male Gay Couples Donate Sperm for Female Gay Couples so they can still contribute to Procreation..  Sex is not the only means of having Babies, there Artificial Insemination.

And indeed there are Gay Couples who Plan and then go on to have Children.

Joylitt,

Whether you are consciously aware or not, your comment is inherently homophobic by the simple insinuation that Weyland's alleged misogyny must imply he is gay. Please leave your prejudices back in the '90s.

Anyway, I wanted to say that I wonder if that Alien Harvest script which surfaced on the road to Prometheus had any influence for the inclusion of LGBT characters -- that was an interesting script BTW.

I wouldn't call them progressive. They do what they do because they don't want any trouble. Each time they include gay characters they always have to show off.

Oh look they are kissing, they are gay, look how progressive we are!

When they have a gay character they always have to tell us about it. In A:C they are a couple so it's understandable that we see them kissing and stuff. But in other movies, they have to tell us one way or another, like it matters.

They are implying gay people are special. Look, we don't give a sh*t, it doesn't matter whether he's homo or not.

Stop shoving your progressiveness down our throats Hollywood!

Yeah I agree with Edgy Name..  Im one of those guys who thinks what people like to do in the bedroom is really no ones else's business.

Strange. Way back when I don't think anyone got up in arms about Kirk and Uhura being forced to kiss.

Stan Winston (deceased) My joke was purposedly trying to be politically incorrect. And you are correct, most gays idolize women. I am not one of them. It is not prejudice, it is just a preference.

Joylitt, looks like it's a sense of humor failure on my part. Sorry. I should read between the lines more often.

Stan Winston (deceased) No offence taken :-) I Don't even think Weyland is mysoginistic. It's just storywise, I  guess they don't want to pit a strong female protagonist against a female android for instance. A male android works better.

Just to throw in to make people happy. I've been in private talks with Chris our admin and he's gonna try to release his Alien: Covenant spoiler and non-spoiler review this Saturday. He's attending the world premiere which is tomorrow in the UK at 5PM. The review embargo lifts on Saturday so to all like me who wants answers we don't have to wait too much longer my friends!!!!

Jem587 Thanks- Chris said we could submit real names with questions if we wanted to- I gave my real name although my questions weren't as strong as others. Anyone else give names? Just curious. Sorry to go OT.

I would be the troll. Some people say I look like a troll. I'm 4'1..400 pounds and eat only red RAW meat.

MemberTrilobiteMay-03-2017 5:17 PM

It would be funny if Chris gave a completely red herring filled review!

I do not consider it some sort of marketing ploy, or Hollywood trying to be progressive in having its two main security officers being gay. In fact there is a historical precedence for this that goes back all the way the ancient Greece, especially the Spartan army and how gay relationships affected morale and duty (Thermopylae anyone?). The criticism about why would there be a gay couple on board a colonisation ship seems to come from those who have not taken a proper look at the characters and the job they perform. The characters are military and they are there to protect, and the first to put their lives on the line because they are not expected to procreate. I’m surprised no one has brought this up as yet, as I think it will form a very key part of the movie.

Batchpool Connon fodder? That's no good neither lol Now seriously homosexuality is part of nature, in every family lineage you will find it. It might skip one generation or two but it's always there. It is crazy to deny it.

I agree

@ Joylitt. Not cannon fodder. In ancient military history it was about duty and honour. It is not about denying homosexuality either. Greek military looked at a way of making homosexuality a force to be reckoned with. It looked at the positive aspects rather than deny it through bigoted eyes as a negative in society.

Jem587 All the more reason for Chris to do a troll review- and to really troll everyone, shut down the forum until 20 May. THAT would be a memorable troll!

I have read and heard many negative and upsetting comments made at this point in the film. Here is one comment made by a right wing person online,

That movie already drove me away with it's pc leftard bullshit, by having a gay couple additionally to the straight couples in the crew. Because... well... just because. They chose couples to colonise that new planet. So what is that gay couple going to do? Yeah, that's gonna help! Why not having a transgender man or woman in there where we're at it? Or a 67th wave muslim feminist (hey, it's the future!) that hates men? I mean that movie (like most movies) will have its fair share of bullshit that doesn't make sense on the second look. But this nonsense is done on purpose, right in your face, just because of some idiotic agenda and therefore completely avoidable!

As an atheist, left wing, LGBT person myself I do not agree with such hate filled views. I think discussions about life as a whole can lead us to a more open mind regarding sexuality. I am not sure if the debate falls into religion vs science, homosexuality exists and therefore is part of nature, and the religious rhetoric intertwined in all social fabric that condemns it...These films actually make us think about our beliefs and about existence on the planet and in the universe and I appreciate Ridley for that. The franchise has seen many similar points touched, like those of a female hero, female empowerment etc, as opposed to childbearing, cleaning, and wanting someone to rescue them, look at Daniels, Ripley..and even David seems sexually ambiguous too, I also like seeing black characters have a presence like we saw on the Nostromo, Prometheus, Aliens 2 and three.

MemberTrilobiteMay-03-2017 5:45 PM

Don't worry- Chris is too nice. Believe me I have tried to talk him into some  April Fool Day stunts and he wouldn't do it!

dk

MemberTrilobiteMay-03-2017 5:54 PM

AaronStar That's a big reason why I like Star Trek so much- especially TOS. They tackled issues like that without being preachy back in a pretty turbulent time (at least in the States). And those shows still hold up today imo. Back then it was more about race/politics than sexuality per se.

joylitt

MemberNeomorphMay-03-2017 5:54 PM

AaronStar Whats the use of even considering an opinion like that. It is so sad that something inherently good like religion can be perverted by crazy people. Last night I was watching this documentary and some lady from the 60's is heard saying  “God forgives murder and he forgives adultery. But he is actually very angry and curses all those who integrate.” It bogged my mind
