This small overlooked bit of info has been there all along, and may point to the real bad guy. Its listed under 'Operation' and states;"Customizable vocational or goal-objective programming is available on some models."
If David is in fact the antagonist in Covenant, its due to one of the first 3 possibilities. If its Weyland who is responsible, it would be the 4th.
1)Either David has been created without addressing the incredibly dangerous issue of where his beyond human intelligence and reasoning could possibly lead him / unintended or unforeseen objective.
2) David has become sentient and has his own personal agenda/ objective.
3) The David we know isn't a production model, but a modified unique version that can explain his relationship with Weyland, or other actions an 'out of the box' David-8 wouldn't be expected to do. Modification that resulted in damage leading to his eventual role.
4) He is perhaps following orders given as a contingency by Weyland himself/ a final objective by an old man not content to let go of life without knowing others will be held accountable for his. Simply put, revenge or punishment for an unexpected outcome.
I think this feature in all likelihood was used by Weyland, in some form or another. Either as a justification for his questionable actions in the first film, or for his intent and possible motivations in the upcoming. Maybe both. Weyland seems the type to very likely to have the last laugh if he felt the scenario calling for it was possible.
I'd like think its more an issue with David becoming partially sentient and feeling distain for the engineers and humans since both have no respect for what he is. Moreover his own ability to equally reason would then mirror and justify the lack of respect.
