The trilobite, terrifying or not so much?

OvomorphMember0 XPJun-20-2012 5:55 PMOne of my favorite scenes in the film, is the struggle between the last engineer and the trilobite at the med pod entrance. What do you guys think of the trilobite's design, intention, execution by the artists etc?

OvomorphMember0 XPJun-20-2012 6:01 PMI feel anything that looks like a giant squid is a bit of a cop-out in the creativity department. That being said I thought the special effects were very realistic and fun to watch.

OvomorphMember0 XPJun-20-2012 6:08 PMEven having tentacles, I think it had a fresh design. That scene is also one of my favorites.
Have you heard of phoenix asteroids? They glow in every color of the rainbow...they travel endlessly through space...

OvomorphMember0 XPJun-20-2012 6:14 PMoh yes. Bob fighting the Squid is pretty nasty. My fave part of the movie is the beginning of it. And the one when BoB hitts Weyland with David 8's head. WIKED!!!!! ,,/ x . x ,,/

OvomorphMember0 XPJun-20-2012 6:15 PMIf you look at nature, it is always defining itself for optimum. The squid and all its equitpment seemed a perfect match for an Engineer...Anything less could have been overcome by the Engineer...From the arms race point of view...which is the prey and predator keep growing to stay out of each others reach, the squid is literally ON TOP OF HIS the same token, if you bring fire arms or weopans into it, the squid too big a target to in time, it would reduce itself to being faster and more lethal...ENTER ALIEN....

OvomorphMember0 XPJun-20-2012 6:42 PMwow, thanks so much for all the replies so far guys. I personally thought the trilobite was quite interesting in its concept. It belongs in the alien universe in respect that it grows enormous very rapidly and resembles a facehugger. However, it was hard for me to understand why a parasite would have teeth if it impregnates its host via a proboscis tube and not through the mouth. Like a tick or a leech. Also, I don't know if you guys remember but did some of the tentacles after it grew larger turn into legs? Right before the engineer is overpowered you can clearly see that its supporting itself by very sturdy like tentacles that resemble legs to me. Thanks a lot for the replies and keep them coming ;)!!!!!

OvomorphMember0 XPJun-20-2012 6:57 PMFreeze: LMAO yoduh84: you are welcome, friend. The Trilobite is a raw form of the Facehugger... with teeth.

OvomorphMember0 XPJun-20-2012 7:18 PMIt worked for me too. It was obviously even more powerful than the Engineer who'd just been throwing people around like dog toys. The tentacles were clearly capable of becoming semi-rigid like a limb, or constricting like a snake. The Engineer could only hold it off long enough for the second set of tentacles to pop out......if that hadn't worked, it still had a set of teeth to latch onto his head. Lots of redundacy in the design, just like the xeno.

OvomorphMember0 XPJun-20-2012 7:43 PMExcellent ending and very well executed, if not not terribly original. For Geology majors, kind of a dumb name [img][/img]

EngineerAdmin23332 XPJun-20-2012 8:26 PMI thought the Trilobite looked great on screen. Would have liked to see it loose in the ship however!

OvomorphMember0 XPJun-20-2012 8:39 PMI love the look of it, it was quite frightening the first time seeing it; but I have to go with jim100, I hate the name. Since I'm a huge nerd, when I hear "trilobite" I do not think "eldritch abomination/space squid monster", I think a small, extinct (and cute, IMO :3) arthropod.

OvomorphMember0 XPJun-20-2012 9:04 PMalso the second set of tendrils that came out of the center to wrap around the engineer's head reminded me too much of "the thing"

EngineerAdmin23332 XPJun-20-2012 9:05 PMWell, this is considered to be a primordial 'Facehugger', so the name makes a little sense. As Trilobites on Earth are ancient extinct creatures which had to evolve. This gigantic Facehugger needs to evolve to be more efficient. So, I'm sure we'll see some other forms of it before we get to the Facehugger from ALIEN.

OvomorphMember0 XPJun-21-2012 1:23 AMLooked to much like a starfish and the squid design is to soft to really be scary. H.R. Giger once stated, that he thought hands were scary, and the original facehugger almost looked like a strong bony hand with slender and elongated fingers - designed to fit and impregnate a human being. Repulsive and functional by design. The size of the trilobite (they should definitely have chosen another name, that doesn´t belong to an extinct arthropod) makes it look a bit clumsy, as if it could easily fall over its own tentacles. In some of the concept art the trilobite looks more facehugger-like, I would have liked that in the movie as well.

OvomorphMember0 XPJun-21-2012 2:55 AMOne of the best scenes. The designers had to find creature designs that looked somewhat white underwater fauna-like..its a cool, new look and the facehugging feature is enormous compared to Alien. Kane would have been impressed. I wonder what happend to him after he impregnated the engineer.

OvomorphMember0 XPJun-21-2012 5:38 AMIf I had that pulled out of my uterus, i'd be pretty **** scared! The problem is... it was all given away in the trailers, so the moment had kind of passed from one of surprise to one of expectancy. A huge fail there for the film

OvomorphMember0 XPJun-21-2012 5:57 AMI wonder what happend to him after he impregnated the engineer. Presumably it got off him so as not to block the 'emergency exit' of the Xeno. And briefly we see some tentacles to the side, not moving.

OvomorphMember0 XPJun-21-2012 8:16 AMi think trilobite or facehugger is based on concept of vagina dentata.

OvomorphMember0 XPJun-23-2012 6:05 PMDid anyone else think the CGI was a little bit obvious in the scene when it's going into the Enginner's mouth?

OvomorphMember0 XPJun-23-2012 9:03 PMi thought it was a pretty good design myself. on educational television i have seen the insides of live squid such as gills and hearts and the first thing i thought of was that it looks like something from another world, and very reminiscent of some of the shapes and things you see in Giger artwork. of course it was still alive so everything was moving and pumping so it was very amazing and strange. definitely very "alien." i think Ridley Scott is right on with always researching nature for this kind of stuff. especially since in this case earth life is supposed to have been seeded by the engineers.
