Gigerr is all about Bio mechanical. When I first saw the Derelect craft in Alien the design blew me away, because it made no sense aerodynamic wise. I was wondering "wow, why have a spaceship designed with a hammer?"
Enter two main alien creatures featured in Prometheus, the Hammerpede and the Deacon.
Maybe even the ship represents life cycles.
Now I am wondering if the ship with it's female genatalia openings like the original egg design in Giger concept art and these familiar looking appendages have anything to do with the original way the ship was grown, or organic. Maybe the Engineeers craft even symbolize what it produces, as in all the murals, giant heads, and skull on top of the Temple-laboratory.
The photo is in talk prometheus to the left of everything alien above our post.

i thought there were elements of both creatures in each arm of the ship. its a design thing :)

It seems as though the ship has more then one level of semiotic.

Oh, come on, people.
Just below the P R O M E T H E U S banner on every page of this site, there's a background image in the TALK PROMETHEUS box - this is quite a good find ~phd.

Christ in a Pretzel....Elephants in clouds...

SO obvious once you see it. Of course one of the ends of the original 'derelict' was designed with the dome head of the alien...but in this version of the ship it does look more like the deacon...much sharper. I hadnt noticed the 'hammerpede' at the other end but there it is. Wonderful.
LonePraetorianMember2674 XPJun-17-2012 8:57 AM
You are so RIGHT! Well spotted, now I'm off to check out some pics of the derelict from A L I E N.............
LonePraetorianMember2674 XPJun-17-2012 9:17 AM
That is just so cool!!!!!!!!!
One end of the 'derelict' has the domed head as galacticnorth said, can't see the inner surface of the other side though...damn
LonePraetorianMember2674 XPJun-17-2012 10:39 AM
this thread was merely a ruse to send me off on a hopeless quest to find a facehugger/derelict pic.......you evil Karstenphd you!!!! lol
KarstenphdOvomorphMember67 XPJun-17-2012 9:34 PM
OK,K, maybe I'm Roarsching, but anythings possible. Maybe it's abstract Engineer architechture, pareidolia, semiotic, Christ in a Pretzel...Elephants in clouds, or a ruse to send The Lone Gunwoman(TM) on a hopeless quest, but as Manfred Mann said "Mamma allways told me not to look into the eye's of the sun, but momma, that's where the fun is, as sang in Blinded by the light.
The photo made me think.
alxnOvomorphMember0 XPJun-24-2012 9:48 PM
wow that is very cool!
what if the derelict ship formed in a circle is supposed to represent the cycle of life? since it looks like the hammerpede and the deacon maybe it is referencing the alien goo life cycle...also it is rolling in a circular motion at the end. Is that reading too far into it? I hope that made sense
episodenoneOvomorphMember0 XPJun-25-2012 1:38 PM
wow -- people see jesus in pieces of toast also. just because you can imagine it doesnt make it so.
KarstenphdOvomorphMember67 XPJul-14-2012 4:48 PM
Alxn that makes perfect sense.

And thank God people like Giger, Ridley, P.K. Dick etal see dreams in electric sheep!
tankgirlOvomorphMember0 XPJul-14-2012 9:40 PM
thought you guys might find this interesting
it includes a lot of snippets of Giger talking about how he designed the original derelict and why it went through some changes

Just how practical is this ship's design? I mean a ring shaped vessel..must be a nightmare for the crew to work on.
Maybe that is the answer,,The Engineers were not thinking beings,,androids going through robotic motions,,never really thinking,,just doing what is programmed in their DNA..execute the next program.

"Just how practical is this ship's design? I mean a ring shaped vessel..must be a nightmare for the crew to work on."
Aerodynamically, it's pants. So we can rule out this as being any kind of issue: it must have a force bubble that whips air out of the way when it's in flight.
As to why it is the shape that it is, it's an enduring mystery. Engineers don't have to play by our rules. They're clearly into symbolism in a big way (murals, temples, carvings, ships...) and that seems to take precedent over comfort.
Their technology (and Giger's design!) is awesome. Maybe they grew the ship using some kind of biotech. It certainly looks like some kind of organic form. You have to be careful using words like these, though, since they are a super-advanced species. Extrapolating the kind of technology that we know about may not be at all appropriate for such a civilization.
The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent

"...They're clearly into symbolism in a big way (murals, temples, carvings, ships...)
Maybe this the 'artistic' side of Engineerrs' personality Something that makes a statement to other species they discovered around their Universe...
It seems to me that the missing part of the ring was intentional..and 'Circle of Life' thinking is OK ..for now..

Yup, there's something in that I think. Also has anyone else thought this looks familiar?
Cant find a pic online but on my Queen Alien collectible from Aliens, if you look at the spines on her back they look remarkably similar....
RSANDOvomorphMember0 XPJul-17-2012 3:33 PM
Yup! Very cool.
