MemberOvomorphMar-13-2012 12:46 PMI just saw a trailer of BATTLESHIP which looks like a TRANSFORMERS clone. With its CGI alien craft, destruction of a city, big guns, gung ho military types, this is just another attempt to replicate ID4 box office success with zero creativity. . From the images of the trailer, BATTLESHIP looks cliched at best. My beef is this: Why Hollywood loves to release similar movies (in this case scifi, alien themed genre) within one month of each other? Wouldn't they cannibalize each other? In the 3rd trailer of BATTLESHIP, there is even a scene where they examine an alien humanoid in a suit. This movie opens less than a month from PROMETHEUS which no doubt will rob some of its potential box office earning.

MemberOvomorphMar-13-2012 1:35 PMI suppose competiting studios deliberately aim to take revenue from one another.
But I for one welcome it, because I think juxtaposing Prometheus with any of these popcorn movies will further expose their weaknesses and Prometheus' superiority.
Remember also that, Prometheus was scheduled to come out at the end of this month, but the studio decided it was worth holding back until the Summer. So it must be good enough to hold its own.

MemberOvomorphMar-13-2012 1:42 PMI agree, they are a bit close, but similar to what Starbeast said, if people like this one then they'd certainly want to see Prometheus.
And uh, kick me in the butt, but, I liked it - I will certainly go to see it.

MemberOvomorphMar-13-2012 1:42 PMThere is no doubt PROMETHEUS looks like a superior film from the trailers alone. But I would like to contest the rationale of moving it to June where you can have August or even the Holiday season as a launching point. March has WRATH OF TITANS (Fox may not want confusion with another Titan reference there?), May has AVENGERS & BATTLESHIP, all 3 movies, believe it or not, feature a gigantic Kraken-like monster terrorizing humans. Remember box office fatigue?

MemberOvomorphMar-13-2012 2:43 PMIt is Very CLEAR that they are not even the same class of movie. That's like compairing Transformers and the original Alien. I enjoyed both movies, (only 1st Transformers movie) but come on, you can't compair them. Yes it can take away some revenue from one another. Prometheus is a big summer film. It is going to have to compete with something, but as always the strong will survive. If Prometheus proves to be the epic blockbuster we all hope it to be it's going to crush any garbage in it's way. Likewise if it sucks it will be pushed by the wayside.

MemberOvomorphMar-13-2012 4:35 PMI agree with everything said so far.
I think the sad fact is that there are always people who would prefer watching Battleship over Prometheus. And rather many too. Especially as the plot of Prometheus could be a lot 'heavier' and subtler - Harder to comprehend, for some people atleast.
Especially if this movie opens with good ratings, it could overshadow Prometheus. Also, the marketing campaign has big effect everywhere, here in Finland + in USA especially. So it's very much about how much FOX decides to burn money for Prometheus (this viral campaign really catches us "nerds" only). But I believe that FOX will launch very large, very loud conventional campaign too.

MemberOvomorphMar-13-2012 10:46 PMI wouldn't be worried about it.
The dim-witted, popcorn-eating masses will go see Battleship a month before seeing Prometheus. I've found those kinds of people really don't care what they're seeing most of the time; they just go, buy popcorn, sit, and stare at a screen while chewing the cud, like a bunch of livestock.
A month is a long time for a movie to steal people away; it would have to be a blockbuster to steal a significant amount of seats away from a new release.
