Way back in the late eighties and early nineties Virtual Reality made a brief appearance. Despite the limitations of the technology at that time the revelation did inspire a brief wave of VR related media such as the movie Lawnmower Man, as well as a series of video games including Nintendo's Starwing and SEGA's Virtua Racing. VR's trademark polygonal look was even used in the video for Dire Straits 1987 hit single Money for Nothing.
Thankfully the computing power behind most consoles, PC's and mobile media (Phones, Tablets etc.) in today's digital age has surpassed what was thought possible thirty years ago with modern VR devices offering almost photorealistic visuals in HD and even 4k. Although still viewed by many as a gimmick early explorations into the technology have given rise to simple video games such as the Rick and Morty Simulator: Rick-ality. The movie industry has also invested in the fledgling technology, although only as a marketing device for movies such as recent science fiction hits The Force Awakens and Kong: Skull Island, though we expect Hollywood studios have plans for more extensive uses of the technology.
Being such a new technology, VR is still somewhat expensive for most general audiences but with the global accessibility offered by Youtube, many movie studios have also offered these VR experiences as 360-degree videos, in which the user can change the camera angle of the video, giving a pseudo-VR experience. "In Utero", now available as a 360 experience was released as the VR experience used to promote Alien Covenant, with users experiencing the birth of the movies new antagonist, the Neomorph through the creatures own eyes.
Unfortunately, 360 degree videos don't seem to work with our media plugin but for those wishing to experience the back bursting video, we have included the link below...
