Alien: Covenant has yet to release theatrically in China (June 16th) but already we're hearing that the film has undergone some significant cuts before it's considered acceptable for Chinese audiences. This, I might add is further cuts in addition to the 20 minutes of footage which was already cut from the film for its European and North American debuts.

Early screening reactions from China have confirmed that the majority of the cut sequences involve a lot of the Alien footage and its associated gory scenes with the Covenant crew. No doubt, Alien: Covenant did not shy away from showing a little blood - but it would seem nearly all of these graphic sequences have been completely removed.

According to to a report by The Bejinger (via AvPGalaxy):

On a Baidu message board, one viewer who attended an advance screening called the censored version “extremely frustrating” to watch, estimating that the film’s monsters are only shown on screen for a total of “one to two minutes.”

The poster said the “distinct” cuts are most noticeable in two scenes in the film’s second half, explaining that all gory images of aliens covered in blood have been removed as have scenes in which humans are attacked.

One scene from Alien: Covenant that involves a “broken back” has been changed so that “in the China version you can only see the scared expressions of the people outside the door.

Although these kinds of edits are not uncommon for graphic films of this nature in China, removing significant amounts of Alien footage from the film will undoubtedly negatively affect peoples' reactions to it and may hinder its box office earnings.

Alien: Covenant currently sits at $176,910,529 at the worldwide box office. We're hoping its international release in both China and Japan can help bolster these numbers high enough to guarantee that sequel Ridley Scott plans to start filming within a year.

The future of Alien

The Alien franchise is taking a dramatic turn at 20th Century Studios, now owned by Disney. Currently there are two major Alien projects in development - a new Alien TV series by Noah Hawley and a new, stand-alone Alien movie being directed by Fede Alvarez. Both of which will be taking the franchise in a new direction - moving away from the Alien prequel direction Ridley Scott set out to pursue back in 2012.

Chinese are going to be like the same as many did when they watched Prometheus.... they gonna be... like WTF was that all about.... Prometheus got butchered in the Edit Dept...  and i wonder what difference removing scenes from AC will have.

Mind you its only the Gore, but i wander what amount was left in....  This version is going to be very LAME!

Mind you this means its like a Cert 12 Flick then and if they Market it well, then Millions could go flock to see what would be a bit of crap... but still makes FOX $$$$ to Fund the sequel.

At least they get the EXTENDED David VS Walter KUNG FU Scene LOL

PraetorianMember3378 XPJun-09-2017 4:05 PM

Who knows? Perhaps the Chinese version will deliver the perfect Alien Covenant experience. :)

No bad cgi, no kiss, no alien. It will be like the original one. :)

Seriously, I think the problem is that the illegal copies did a huge damage. The movie should have been released at the same time in every country.

EngineerAdmin22767 XPJun-09-2017 4:08 PM

Indeed, Dave. An Alien movie, promoted as an Alien movie, minus all actual Alien footage. I don't see Covenant performing well for repeat-viewings in China, but like you said, may bank on tailoring to a wider demographic.

I forgot if it was on IMDB forum back then or here while i was a reader only, but I remember someone writing in his thread about how the censorship in countries like china might have influenced the movie or will influence its final success. Most replies were negative and disbelieving as far as i remember right.

If someone knows what I am talking about please Link it to me.

P.S I hope they left the flute scene in ;)

I have recently seen a video of Ridley Scott disagreeing very angry and quite upset with an interviewer on youtube, based onof the controversial 20 m cut of footage carried out, I m going to find it, (missing). He is always right to the point, I do not have an English mentality, but I must assume that everything he is telling was really true.

FacehuggerMember126 XPJun-10-2017 1:58 AM

So they cut out all the best parts from the movie... Great! What's next, Wonder Woman wearing a jumpsuit? Can't believe the Chinese are getting a botched version. I hope they still flock en masse to the theatres though. They have my sympathies...

OvomorphMember41 XPJun-10-2017 8:31 AM

It's kinda weird that China cuts so many gory scenes despite China also produced and released movies that are gory and brutal.

Probably, they wanted to have something like the PG13 rating to allow younger audience to watch it.

If they cut most of the CGI scenes of the Protomorph it might be even better.

Seeing it so often in the bright makes it even less scary than in the AVP movies or Alien Resurrection.

NeomorphMember1686 XPJun-10-2017 12:59 PM

That's lame if so, hopefully not all of this is true.

OvomorphMember11 XPJun-10-2017 6:41 PM

Hello guys I'm new here. In advance, sorry for my bad English...

Just I wanna say : I've spent 2 years in China, Shanghai and Beijing. This country is one of the most worst place on Earth for freedom about movies content and cinema. Period.

They cheat and stole our copyrights worldwide as they breath.

There are a bunch of markets in China's main cities where you can buy fake DVD/BluRay of Americans, Europeans, well, Western movies, for a couples of bucks (DVD/Blu Ray covers included)

Those chinks are trying everything to wipe out our movie business. I'm warning you friends... :/

OvomorphMember41 XPJun-11-2017 10:47 AM

Seriously, almost in every Asian country, you can buy plenty of fake or illegal copies of movies, except in Japan and South Korea.

And when it comes to illegal download of movies, i would say it's a global issue.

No need only to blame one country.

I'm just surprised, that the Chinese would cut this movie so much.

OvomorphMember10 XPJun-11-2017 2:22 PM

We don't really care about China/Japan showing anyway. My friend who lives there says they can watch the same version as North America by paying for it on 3rd party movie apps, ie Google Play/Movies, Apple. I feel sorry for the people who don't have private viewing access and has to go to the theater. I plan on re watching this movie on google play when it releases showing the deluxe version with extra footage.

Ha... AC is doomed now. Good riddance. Ridley and Fox have dug this series into the ground. It's dead. AC is flopping like the piece of **** that it is.

NeomorphMember1686 XPJun-19-2017 7:42 AM

Patient L:

I think that Alien Covenant is better than Prometheus because it has better characters and that there is a closer link to the Xeno. I didn’t mind that it didn’t have that much to do with the Engineers since Prometheus made a mess of them. This is about taste but I think that Prometheus is ****ter than AC because if they hadn’t done such a mess of Prometheus than maybe more would have been interested in AC. Your point that Fox and Ridley have created problems for the franchise is probably correct but I think that Alien Covenant is a lot better.

"AC is flopping like the piece of **** that it is."

Why is it that bad? That statement was just emotional, if you want to explain to someone why you didn’t like the movie then you got to do better than that.

FacehuggerMember158 XPJun-19-2017 2:39 PM

Prometheus had imagination and mystery.

Alien Covenant had an interesting first act and then descended into bad rehash fan service without any imagination and a terrible explanation for the origin of the xeno. A mad scientist robot with daddy issues created the xeno. Brilliant, Ridley. Absolutely brilliant. That's a horrible trope with zero mystery. Mystery is something the series has thrived on from the beginning. Prometheus maintained that. Lindelof and Spaihts understood that. Alien Covenant ruined it. And we got a half-assed return of the xeno without any real tension and bad CGI.

Hell, even the main poster used to promote Alien: Covenant was deceptive.

OvomorphMember11 XPJun-27-2017 3:48 AM

As a Chinese I have to say sorry about the illegal copies. It's truth, when I was a kid I could get many illegal copies of movies and I didn't know that was wrong. Many people even have no idea what copy right is. But, hey, we are getting better, not like many years ago, now it's getting harder and harder to get illegal copies. And many video webs buying copy rights so we can watch online. We are changing better so please don't call us chinks that hurts me.

For the deleted scenes, as you guys feel, as a fans I hope to watch the whole parts...

That's the way the movie should be seen, hahahaha, because most of that stuff is terrible and the worst and cheesiest parts of the movie. They got so lucky to not see the garbage that is Alien Covenant.
