Alien: Covenant is finally less than 100 days away! Releasing on May 19th, 2017 the sci-fi epic directed once again by visionary director Ridley Scott will progress the story between 2012's Prometheus and 1979's Alien. With three months to prepare for the film's theatrical debut, I've compiled a list of recommendations fans should consider partaking in prior to viewing the Prometheus sequel on opening night. If you have any additional recommendations, be sure to share them in the comments section below!

Watch Prometheus, Alien and Aliens - in that order

This point should be a no-brainer, get familiar with the source material! Alien: Covenant is also a prequel to Alien, but also a sequel to Prometheus. Whether you were a fan of Prometheus or not, I strongly recommend re-watching it a few times before venturing into Covenant. Become familiar with the characters, the minor plot details and pay attention to the props used by the crew.

Alien is the same - pay attention to the small details. Although Alien has less going on than Prometheus, both films contain crucial information which will aid your understanding of Alien: Covenant.

With regards to Aliens - again keep an eye on the opening scenes. Take note of many key moments like the dropship sequence and lab sequences. For the most part, Aliens will be good reference for obvious homages and other subtle references within Covenant. Making the connections will be a lot easier upon having a good grasp of every moment between these three films.

Play Alien: Isolation

Prepare your adrenal system for the heart-pounding, suspenseful nature of Alien: Covenant. Watching Prometheus through to Aliens will be a great way to familiarize yourself with the lore's source material, but it will not prepare you for the traumatizing thrills of Covenant's atmosphere. Very few games, especially Alien games (ironically) mimic the sheer terror and suspense created with Scott's original AlienAlien: Isolation is one of the rare ones to give you, the viewer, an accurate portrayal of what watching Covenant is going to be like.

I recommend playing the game in complete darkness, if you're a PC gamer, use headphones to cancel out background noise so you can completely immerse yourself into the game.

Read our interview with concept artist Dane Hallett

In January, we interviewed Alien: Covenant concept artist Dane Hallett. During the interview we discussed his work on Covenant as well possible links between its aesthetic and that of Prometheus and Alien. Reading the interview will help gauge your expectations for how Alien: Covenant will look. Ultimately to summarize, the overall expectations should be that Covenant's aesthetic will be slightly more dated than that of Prometheus but not quite as biomechanical and warn-out as that of Alien. I also recommend checking out the interview with Wayne Haag (another concept artist who worked on Covenant), conducted by our friends at AvPGalaxy - he too touches on the aesthetic of Alien: Covenant compared to the rest of the Alien series. Combined, these two insights will help prepare you for your viewing of Alien: Covenant.

Get yourself an Alien: Covenant shirt

For many of us, Alien: Covenant is going to be the cinematic experience of the year. So, naturally many of us will wish to make the most out of the experience. One way is to dress up and / or wear attire related to the film. If anything, it will certainly turn heads and get compliments from others seeing the film with you and not to mention, if you ever meet any of those involved with Alien: Covenant's production at conventions or in public, a Covenant shirt would be a great canvas to sport signatures! Check out a few options below, each one can double as a hoodie, tank top and more:

Yes, I suggest getting the novelizations of those 3 movies as well.  There is a lot of info to glean from them that you don't see in the movies.

Good point, Rick! The novels are definitely a must.

Spoiler alert for anyone who hasn't seen or read anything to do with the Alien franchise.

For what it's worth, read John Spaight's Alien: Engineers script after watching Prometheus to get an idea of unused concept material that might be recycled in Alien: Covenant. I also think River of Pain is a useful read, albeit not canon (I think), to give us an account of what (could have) happened to the LV-426 colonists. It definitely feeds the imagination if nothing else.

Alien: Isolation scares me so much I can't get further than about half way through it, and try finding the old Aliens computer game which I had on the ZX Spectrum in the early 1990s. Atmospherically scary too, especially when there weren't many of you left.

Can I also suggest that everyone who hasn't seen it, watches the cut nest/cocoon scene from Alien. Definitely something which should help contribute to theories on the lifecycle of the alien now that Prometheus and Covenant have gone there.

I wasn't aware that Prometheus had a novelization. I'll have to check it out

Hey, Rick, which Prometheus novelization are you referring to? I've only seen a Japanese version, but none in English.

I would suggest...

Watch Prometheus and then AVPR ;)

At least that way it cant be as bad as AVPR so you have less chance to be disappointed and then may end up walking out and thinking actually Prometheus was not bad, it was trying to show us some new things ;)

Hey Chris, where would you buy a novel of Prometheus? I tried looking but couldn't find an English version of the Prometheus novel

You could probably find a bootleg translation on the internet

I'm a gamer, but Alien:Isolation makes me nauseated. I don't know what it is, but the movement is sickening and I can barely play it. Anyone else have that problem?

Great ideas on prepping though! I'm reading all the novels and comics in the canon chronologically, and I'll prob watch all 3 films several more times before may 19th.

May 19th is our anniversary, and we will be on vacation, so I'll have to stay off the net for about a week since we'll be abroad, so as not to get spoiled!

Someone did a remake of it here...

Better Graphics and Sound than the Original here

The above one is better than previous post as the Youtuber in other talks through it, so you dont get to hear the sound effects lol

Harder than Alien Isolation but i only played that once lol

Anyone who remembers Aliens on the ZX Spectrum will remember how easy it was to get lost, it was basically one Maze infested with Xenos

 Update....

Gonna have to play that Remake of it.....    notice its got a Map in the Top Corner.... oh boy did the Original need this..

I know it has been mentioned in a comment above but I have to back it up and say that you should read the original john spaihts script called Alien: engineers. I agree they may recycle ideas from this script for covenant more importantly it gives a much better idea of the motivations of David and also the different types of alien that we will probably see in covenant. the neomroph being one of them

And while you're at it, watch Alien 3 (assembly cut) to see the amazing, if slightly depressing conclusion to Ripley's story.

And watch the do***entaries found on the Anthology blu-ray set and Prometheus blu-ray, those are amazingly in-depth and offer a great insight in the film making process. It will double your appreciation for these amazing films.

I'll just marathon the movies the night before the release

My preference is to watch the two RS directed films in order of release, that is Alien followed by Prometheus. We start with the dark mystery and horror as it was most masterfully done in 1979. Then we see the same director get back to it 30 years later, and take-on some of the larger mysteries, from a whole other angle. For me this is the greatest prep for Covenant. The other non RS alien movies (although good in their own way) are just a distraction. I wouldn't even consider any AVP, and have none in my movie collection anyway.
