IMDB has released its annual list of the top 10 movies of 2017.

The popular film website breaks down the top 10 based on how many people visit the individual site pages for the films. The exclusive data is derived from IMDbPro’s definitive MOVIEmeter rankings, which are updated weekly throughout the year.

The top ten looks like this:

1. IT

2. Wonder Woman

3. Beauty and the Beast

4. Logan

5. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

6. Justice League

7. Split

8. Alien: Covenant

9. Thor: Ragnarok

10. Blade Runner 2049

Not bad for Alien Covenant, isn't it?

Let's hope Disney will notice that Alien Covenant made it to the top ten of the most consistently popular film with IMDb users in 2017, so the interest for the franchise was and still is high. Even among the haters.

Quality vise this list is meaningless, it only says which were the most searched after movies of 2017. Of course, an Alien would be highly searched because of brand Recognition. Star Wars is not there because it was just released.

I for one, from that list, I liked only Split.

Agreed. Is is however good to see Alien Covenant made it to the top of the most searched for movies in 2017, it gives me hope for the future of the franchise. And while Wonder Woman and IT were praised and thus the interest for them was raised, Alien Covenant had to run against the biggest hate wave of all the franchise. I still don't get all that hatred, never will.

That's all from me this year. I tried to be optimistic and bring some good news for the Christmas. And the New Year.

Wish you all a very enjoyable festive Season and happiness and good health in 2018!

Let's hope they will start filming soon.

What the hell is hate wave? People don't like for no reason whatsoever but being loud just for kicks? It was not bigger than after Prometheus or now Star wars, if such a thing even exist.

I said it many times, I've seen it only because I like Prometheus and as a continuation I felt utterly let bout the lack of care to continue anything, it was only a sloppy reboot. And If I was I would not have high expectations for anything Disney.

daliens That number 8 position does not mean box office success nor critical acclaim, nor fanbase support. It is another proof that the Alien brand is still alive and of how active the fanbase still is, even if just to bash the movie (we agree on this). That is why it is so disappointing that Ridey Scott seems to be willing to deprive this healthy franchise from all excitement by removing the Alien element from it.

Interesting- two RS movies within possibly the same universe in the future. They might have placed at the bottom but they placed- the numbers seem to prove it. Kind of gives a warm fuzzy!

Just to throw in my opinion, as much as I enjoyed AC, the best sequel and movie for 2017 should be John Wick 2.

ali81 I have not seen IT yet except the original SK mini series. Does it cover all the material or is it left open to a "prequel" or "sequel"? Will we be led down a prequel trail of the development of Pennywise and how he turned evil? Sorry to be sarcastic but I have become skeptical lately.

joylitt

MemberNeomorphDec-20-2017 5:57 PM

dk "It" does not include an origin story for Pennywise. At one point there was a planned sequence that was going to explore that, but it didn't make the final cut. This is just It "Chatper One", focusing on the "Loser's Club". 'Chapter 2" will be about the grown ups. The director said that the next movie will delve more into the "cosmic horror" aspect of the story, so it is very likely that we will see much more about Pennywise's origins. I think it was a good choice not to use flashbacks, because that dragged down the second half of the original miniseries.

joylitt I just don't want to see it neutered like Willy Wonka where we saw his Daddy issues. A little back story is good but Pennywise should be enigmatic imo.

Sorry to be OT, but in the case of It, I thought Ash vs Evil Dead did a great job giving backstory and moving forward to a conclusion- with just enough to leave it open (albeit predictable). 20 episodes that fly by fast on Netflix. Shop smart- N Mart!

dk, IT was more 'book' authentic than the MS was. loved IT. looking forward to the sequel and the Pennywise origins story is something iv heard is being rattled around so id def say the studio believe that story is something they know ppl would be interested in.

was somewhat disappointed in Guardians of the galaxy vol2. I was expecting so much more.

joylitt

MemberNeomorphDec-21-2017 12:35 AM

dk The great thing about Ash vs Evil Dread is that it doesn't take itself too seriously. That's how it can get away with being so profane and outrageosly disgusting. To me there is nothing funnier than a demon lady with saggy breasts and bulging eyes jumping at you while spurting profanites in a deep, raspy voice :-)

With little over a week in 2017 to go, it looks like Ill end the year with only a singular cinema experience - Alien Covenant.

However that is not a reflection of how many films i have seen this year, more a reflection of changing viewing trends. With the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime I am content to sit back and wait for Blockbuster films to come to me unless it is something I am greatly looking forward to like AC was...

joylitt

MemberNeomorphDec-21-2017 12:50 AM

IRaptus Well, it seems some producers think that movies that are "too intelectuial" for the general audience should be distributed by Netflix. That is the case with "Annihalation", which will only see theatrical release in North America and China. It will arrive to Netflix 17 days later for the rest of the world. I honestly doubt that a Covenant sequel would find a theatrical release if there are no aliens in it.

ModeratorPraetorianDec-21-2017 1:26 AM

joylitt honestly that is fine by me. Cinema can have the popcorn filled explosion-fests, Im happy enough kicking back at home with a nice scotch watching some quality filming lol. Annihilation is one I am eagerly awaiting.

As for any Covenant sequel, i guess we'll have to wait and see. Your move Disney

joylitt

MemberNeomorphDec-21-2017 1:42 AM

IRaptus I believe Disney would produce an Alien film that would appeal to a wider audience. And I don't really see them making it into a PG-13. Disney distributes stuff that is not intended for children. I just watched the russian film shortlisted in the foreign oscar category, a very bleak story about a lost child, with many sex scenes, profanity and no happy ending in sight. On the Wikipedia page it says this film is distributed by Disney.

In one of our Romanian cinema related sites https://www.cinemagia.ro/filme/annihilation-1182355/ Annihilation is stated to be released on the 23rd. Weirdly no release date is provided on Imdb for us, but many European countries are listed with release dates. Where did you find that news?

I hope there will be no shenanigans with Netflix distribution, because What happened to Monday is still not on it and it was not launched in the cinemas, so to watch i would have had to cross the border to Hungary and watch it dubbed... Idiocy!

joylitt

MemberNeomorphDec-21-2017 2:10 AM

red0guy There are many news articles listed on IMDB. It's really heartbreaking news to see a producer sabotaging his own movie like this.

Great.... I hope at least Netflix will distribute it in my country. And this David Ellison is an @$$-hole for thinking we are stupid.

joylitt

MemberNeomorphDec-21-2017 2:20 AM

red0guy What I find a little bit confusing is what they say about the summer test screenings. I went to a test screening in November, which is Autumn, and the audience applauded at the end, including myself.  The ending was just dazzling, and I am sure Alex Garland hired Natalie Portman because of her performance in "Black Swan".

Lucky one you are!

joylitt

MemberNeomorphDec-21-2017 2:53 AM

red0guy Yeah I consider myself very lucky I was able to attend to that test screening. And twice as lucky that I will be able to see it again on the big screen. I hope Netflix releases it in Romania on the big screen... sometimes they do that. Probably if the movie has a good box office in the US. The traileres have been trending at #1 on youtube if that is indication of anything.

Look I would like to have a way to see it, unlike What happened to Monday....

MemberFacehuggerDec-21-2017 1:02 PM

In (my) reality, I think AC should land higher on their list given the fact there are kid-focused films in the mix.  Low expectation films where each ticket sale is accompanied by an adult/chauffeur ticket sale.  Example being, if child ratings were considered, McDonalds would be rated the best resturant in the world.

joylitt

MemberNeomorphDec-21-2017 5:29 PM

Spearfish This is not what this list is about. The list is about user's traffic on the website's movie page. So the presence in the chart is in itself a recognition to the fans, not to the film. The movie pretty much flopped at the box office and its imdb score is on par with Alien 3. Also, the most "liked" comments from users (or fans) are negative.

Spearfish

MemberFacehuggerDec-21-2017 7:47 PM

I guess I was inferring that page traffic was parents checking if there was cussing and if it was age appropriate for [enter your own kid names].  Maybe I read this one wrong.
