Not a good turnout at all. Still, it was kind of expected due to the later release date. Box office mojo has worldwide numbers for A.C. at $236 million. I say it might sneak to $240 million with a couple of weeks in Japan. So, it will finish it's theatrical runs disappointingly. It is now up to fans, such as us here on scified, to keep the buzz about Covenant and the franchise!

Truely pathetic, by the end of it's run AC will be the 4th horror movie at the box office for 2017, while being the most expensive. It will be lucky to bring in 2.5 times it's production cost (the other successful horrors with at least 10 times the cost).

And I don't that it will out sale Prometheus at the home release market.

Alien Covenant is more than a horror movie. I don't watch horror movies except for Stephen King's adaptations.

4 months after its theater release and 1 month after its bluray release Alien Covenant does very well in Japan. Especially after the hate wave and negative reviews.

And the fact the bluray sales are good is encouraging, fans always want to hold a hard copy of things they love.

Wish it did better but overall not too bad. Hopefully FOX lets Ridley continue his work without any more compromises.

@daliens "Especially after the hate wave and negative reviews"

The reviews by critics on Meta, IMDB, and RT were actually about 70% positive. About the same as Prometheus. Public reviews average around 67% positive, which is also close to Prometheus.

Amazons BR/DVD reviews are always a good after-release determination too. 3.5 out of 5 stars = 70% positive.

On RT the user score is 57. While the amazon scores are divined in 2 for amazon video (2.7) and physichal mediums (3.7). This still remains curios why they don't combine the two (to show the true score of 3.4 - 3.5). In the uk its still at 3.2 in the Uk, 3.2 in France  and 2.8 in Germany.Of course this week will be a best seller in those countries. But in all honesty I don't know if it will sale as many units as Prom.

I am not sure but isn't it a bit early to make a judgment after it just has been there for a short time? After all it doesn't seem very surprising to me since Prometheus was a disappointment and this is a sequel to Prometheus. One other problem that it has is that it focuses mostly on AI at the expense of the human characters.

If the Blu-rays are selling somewhat good then it might not be a disaster if AC doesn't do that well in Japan.

I hope that it doesn't mean that we will get more movies focused on AI. I want it focused on well done human characters.

As long as it doesn't shift the focus from David, he's the main character of these prequels. The humans are indispensable and I thought we got some great characters from Danny, Tennessee, and Oram but that's my opinion.

Lawrence of Arabia: The thing is that I don't want David to be the main focus. I don't care as much about him as I do for the human characters and what they go through (which is what I think that a good movie should be.)

It's too late at this point to switch focus as David is the only character who ties Prometheus with Covenant and so forth. It would throw off the narrative completely if they switched now. Anyways, that's your opinion and we've already had four films with human leads so it's nice to have something different especially considering he's a villain as well.

Lawrence of Arabia: I don't think that it is too late. Sure he will probably have a big role in the next one but his role could be less compared to Prometheus and AC so they cold focus more on the human characters but I understand what you are saying though.

I just read an article where they compare Alien Covenant to Mother! in the way they are both box office poison.

joylitt

MemberNeomorphSep-18-2017 1:28 PM

I like David in Prometheus and I pretty much hate him in Alien Covenant. They ruined the character, making him an over the top, self pitying and obnoxious caricature. His portrayal even affects the way I see Michael Fassbender in other movies, and that's not a good sign. Time to terminate David in my opinion.

Lawrence of Arabia

MemberChestbursterSep-18-2017 1:35 PM

joylitt David has always been that way and his progression in Covenant was natural as he went mad and is free. Michael Fassbender knocked it out of the park and was one of the many saving graces of the film but we are free to our own opinions.

Joylitt:

I agree that David was better in Prometheus, he was straight up evil in AC. He was more gray in Prometheus, which I think was better. They could keep David but keep more attention to the human characters and let them be the important part.

MemberChestbursterSep-18-2017 1:57 PM

 Thoughts_Dreams

Prometheus was David's origin story and the reason why he sees mankind as inferior. He was 'gray' because he was still under Peter Weyland's thumb but now that he perished David is free to do as he pleases though it's far too late as he has become jaded and infected by his creator's God-complex. In Prometheus he was merely biding his time and over the course of the film you saw David's true uncaring/indifferent nature come to the forefront. "Doesn't everyone want their parents dead?"

His character and progression are parallel to Sir Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia.

@red0guy@gmail.com -"On RT the user score is 57"

RT is the last place I would look for an accurate public opinion. That place has morphed into a hate fest. I think IMDB gives a much better picture, and they rated it 6.5 / 10 (65%), from twice as many voters as RT. Amazon here shows 3.7/5 stars (74%) from verified buyers. Google users show 77% liked. Metacritic's users score is 60%.

Point being, more of the public liked it than disliked it. Average all those and it is around 67% positive. With reviewers it is even higher.

"But in all honesty I don't know if it will sale as many units as Prom"

Prom came out in 2012. A lot has changed since then so probably no way AC will sell as many units. Home Video sales have declined every year because VOD/streaming services are taking over. No one knows what those numbers are because the studios don't make them public, but expect AC is doing fine in that arena.

The thing is the odds were stacked against it since Japan isn't a very bankable market for Hollywood anymore. They were popular in the country back in the 1990s, but now Japan's film industry is much stronger, with triple the number of screens from the 1990s. As a result, most (not all, but most) Hollywood films are just less attractive to them.

Even Marvel/DC films don't do very well. Wonder Woman will be lucky if it earns more than $12 million by the end of its run.

It's also important to remember that Japan's preferred measurement for box office ranking is theater attendance. This is because movie tickets are often sold depending on the genre, what country it's from, what studio made it, what gender is buying the ticket and what sort of discount day it is. (There are many.)

Alien: Covenant opened on a Holiday weekend and was practically the only major release, but it looks like it's only #1 via more expensive tickets. Attendance-wise it looks like it may have opened as low as #3. I don't know yet, I'm still waiting for more official numbers from Kogyotsushin to be translated.

Attendance is important because it gives us an indicator of how well it will do in the coming weeks. Strong legs is more important to the Japanese box office than opening weekends, but comparing Saturday's number to Sunday's might give an indication of its future.

If it made $2.6M then it likely opened to an estimated audience of 195,000 for the weekend. For comparison that number is a slightly better opening than Wonder Woman (182,092), Ghost in a Shell (171,203), Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (163,143) and Logan (113,600).

More when I have it.

Why do you ignore the amazon video score which is only 2.7 based on 554 user reviews which are different that the 630 blu-ray/dvd reviews. If AC would be threated as any other movie with both kinds of reviews merged the score would be less, somewhere around 3.4 or 3.5. I don't know why Amazon does this, but it does check it out.

Kethol I did not mean the average rating but the pages and pages of negative reviews and suggestions / recommendations to avoid the film.

Even on the film page from Imdb the review is titled "2 hours of my life I'm never getting back" written by someone with a very meaningful life but who waited until the end of the movie or at least saw 2 hours of it and got bored to death.

I don't get this type of movie goer who pays for the ticket, then regrets the waste of money, who waits until the end then regrets the waste of time only to waste more time to write a negative review. Like he was not allowed to leave the theater if the movie was not what he expected it to be?

There are so many reviews of these type. Is it a trend, does it happen with other movies too, is it fashionable to be a badass reviewer?

Do you leave a movie the second it does something you don't like? If so I'll clarify that MOST moviegoers will watch a movie they paid for all the way through if only hoping it will get better as it goes on, or think it's a waste to walk out completely. If the reviews had said it was so bad they walked out, then you would just criticize them for not giving the whole movie a chance.

If people don't like a movie they say it. It's not so secret conspiracy that everyone is against A:C and secretly got together before the movie came out and just said, "hate on it and don't like it just because." That doesn't happen, in fact that's never happened. If a movie is good typically the reviews say so. You don't always have to agree with the public opinion of a movie, but you still have to acknowledge what it is.

I had a fun enough time watching the new Mummy movie. It's getting terrible reviews, across the board, is it just popular to hate on the new Mummy? No, people just didn't like it. Same goes for A:C(except its average scores are much higher indicating more people liked it)

daliens the 2.9 One star votes ratio from Alien Covenant is not much higher than the 2.3 from The Force Awakens. And yet that film's score is 8.1, while Alien Covenant's is 6.5. Therefore, the 1 stars are not the the only problem. Mother! has a whopping 17.1 One star ratio and yet the average sits at 6.8. That means Alien Covenant did not get enough love from the fanbase to make up for the low ratings. The part of the audience that is really passionate about the David storyline is maybe 5%.

joylitt

MemberNeomorphSep-19-2017 1:59 AM

Im Durp You are right. Most of the times the truth prevails. Consider all the hate movies like "Get out" get (from people who happen to be racist) or "It" (from people who wanted to boycott Stephen King). And yet those movies maintain a high score because they are good. There is a reason why Alien Covenant received a lukewarm response from the fanbase and a good share of hate from people who honestly disliked the movie.

SuperAlien

MemberXenomorphSep-19-2017 2:11 AM

Im Durp I would not compare the Mummy with Alien Covenant. And I would not go to see a movie that leaves me with nothing. You hear that, nothing. Going to every movie and sitting there until it's over only to build up your hate for a review, that I cannot understand.

How many times will you see the Mummy?

Did you write a negative review for AC?

joylitt I stopped long ago writing negative things about Aliens because it's no fun and it hurts other people feelings. I never wrote a review for AC and I believe reviews should be as much as possible objective.
