Is Aliens: Bug Hunt Canon?
VivisectedEngineer
MemberChestbursterJul-28-2017 1:29 PMI just picked up this book, Aliens: Bug Hunt, from Barnes and Noble. It's a collection of short stories in the Alien universe.
So far, I've only read "Broken" which is a backstory for Bishop and it's really good (I literally cried at one point).
I was wondering whether it's actually canon or more like fan fiction because I'm pretty sure Bishop's first name is "Lance" but in "Broken" it doesn't say anything about him having a first name, even when he was first activated he was just called "Bishop" after the chess piece, so it made me wonder.

And everybody please don't forget that Alien Covenant is canon and you can own it on digital HD from August 1.
Enjoy the canon, enjoy the Covenant!

MemberDeaconJul-28-2017 3:11 PMI think Canon can be a personnel choice, i have not read the stories from the Book you have, but i know some of the other Books are considered Canon where its revealed Aliens is not the 2nd time Ripley had dealt with the Xenomorph, was this Rover of Pain? i dont know as i had no interest in a story that places a event between Alien and Aliens as far as in Canon.
To me Ripley went to Cryo-Sleep at the End of Alien and awoken at the beginning of Aliens.. Nothing in between.
Yet the story about her in between is considered canon, but not as far as i am concerned which is why i think Canon should be a personnel Preference unless a series of Movies do not add up to the events.. which the book concerning Ripley between Alien and Aliens to me seems like it would conflict what the movies showed.

hopefully it is a good read

MemberChestbursterJul-28-2017 4:18 PMI like your idea. I'd like to consider "Broken" canon because it's such a great story.
Yet, if canon is down to personal preference...can I personally consider Alien 3 not canon? Overall, it is a well-written and well-directed movie, but I would sort of like to just...cover my eyes and ears and imagine that Bishop and Newt have not died, lol.
The term "canon" originates in Catholicism right? Well, I've heard that there are "Cafeteria Catholics" who pick and choose what works best for them. I'm considering becoming a "Cafeteria-Alien-Fan", k? ^-^ ...La la la, I can't hear you! Newt and Bishop are fine! Bishop got repaired and he's back to being top-of-the-line again! la la la!
I'm sure I'd like to give my thoughts on them! Have you read them? Is there a specific one you'd recommend? So far, I really liked the Bishop story.

MemberTrilobiteJul-28-2017 4:48 PMI might have to look at that if I ever get time. Sounds interesting.
Canon is pretty much personal choice. It only gets sticky with debates on the forum. Some only consider the Qudrilogy, Prometheus and AC as canon while others consider only RS films as canon.

ModeratorPraetorianJul-28-2017 4:57 PMVivisectedEngineer no i haven't read Bug Hunt yet, just curious if it is any good, maybe some good little backstories, or new information :)
The last Alien book i read was River of Pain. It gave an interesting perspective and backstory to the Hadley's Hope colony!! Have you read it, or that trilogy?

MemberChestbursterJul-28-2017 6:37 PMRiver of Pain, haven't read it but I think I may have spotted it there at Barnes and Noble. Luckily I get a teacher discount there!
I'll have to check it out! But, my plate's a little full right now, because I'm also reading Bug Hunt and the Aliens: Defiance comic series.
Wait, does River of Pain have an Android? Actually...I don't want to read anything that doesn't have an Android.

ModeratorPraetorianJul-28-2017 6:43 PMVivisectedEngineer River of Pain does not have a android. BUT the first book in the trilogy Out of the Shadows has an android in it that we are all very familiar with.....
Great book too If i could recommend any of the Alien books it would be that one!
VivisectedEngineer
MemberChestbursterJul-28-2017 7:00 PMNo Android in River of Pain, eh? That's actually probably why I didn't get it. My friend and I were in B&N and I was literally flipping through the Alien books and comics saying "Does this one have an Android?" And if the answer was "Nope." I'd put it back...
Defiance has a pretty cool Android called "Davis."
Just read up on "Out of the Shadows", looks like it has Ash in it?? Awesome! I'd love to learn more about his nature and motives. I'll definitely check it out! Thanks!

Yes! Do check it out! It's a collection of 19 stories. But, skip straight to "Broken" because it's great!
I.Raptus
ModeratorPraetorianJul-29-2017 3:16 PMVivisectedEngineer yep :) Ash and Ripley are in it. The one common criticism of the book is that they really didn't need to be. It is a forgone conclusion that Ripley must survive..
The story is strong enough without them, but it a nice touch nonetheless.

MemberNeomorphJul-30-2017 3:10 AMiraptus, yes we are all very familiar with the AI in out of the shadows. I love the trilogy book series and river of pain is my favourite. im glad they are regarded as canon and I would def pay to see these films on the big screen. these books are a must by for all alien fans. theres a scene inside the derelict involving newts mother and father and it would be brilliant for the franchise to be shown on screen.
