Could David "Swap Bodies" with Walter?

Hello there. With Alien: Covenant having at last been released to the world, I have become somewhat distracted by an underlying though that occured to me while pondering David and Walter: is it possible David - clearly devious - could replace Walter's mind and psyche with his own? For that matter, could David "jump" from one body to another with regards to other, less advanced andoids? In my opinion, the possibility is not beyond the scope of David's personality - nor is it an impossibility with regards to his sophistication. However, I find myself wondering if such an advent would be "correct" or "fitting" to the Alien universe. As always, your thoughts and conjecture with regards to this topic are most welcome appreciated, even if you choose to keep them to yourself. :)

Something Real Aliens: Out of the Shadows which is canon has Ash's AI consciousness "jump" and install itself on the Narcissus computer, and then later to the Marion orbital mining vessel mainframe.

So it is within the realm of fitting within the Alien universe. Being software there is no reason an AI's consciousness couldn't be transferred. In David's case I doubt it would be as quick and simple an upgrade into a newer version body in the field as we saw in A:C, but who knows its the future man.

Interesting topic though!

IRAPTUS - How very neat! I was not aware of Aliens: Out of the Shadows! Knowing that Ash uploaded his memory and consciousness to another computer is extremely fascinating - and somewhat frightening! Thank you ever so much for providing me with this information! I will certainly be attempting to find a copy of Aliens: Out of the Shadows in the near future. By chance, do you know where I can obtain a copy? :)

Please Ridley, studio gods: DON'T let Ash be David... =(

Something Real I got my copy on Kindle via Amazon digital but im sure there are physical copies too. It's the first book in loosely based trilogy. Sea of Sorrows follows it, these two follow the story of LV178 and tie in with Alien.

Then River of Pain follows the events on LV426 leading up to the colony being over-ran by xenos.

All the books are brilliant and highly recommended!!

That's probably what actually happened.  They don't have to swap "minds" or "psyches"; they're just robots.  The programming of one could be loaded into the other easily.

Also, notice that the android that remains on the Covenant has dark hair like Walter, even though it's David' programming inside.  In addition, David had a wound to his chin that doesn't appear on this android.

I never buy into those Books....

Muddies up the timeline a little for me... just a Fan Service attempt of a serious tie in Book...  But Alas Canon is a Personnel Opinion.... the only Canon that no one can 100% deny is what is shown on Film.

I find a Androids Ability to upload the AI as a Serious Oversight and Flaw by the W-Y Company... if this proves to be what can happen... then W-Y have left a Serious Flaw in their Systems... but this means we just have fallen into the same errors of the Engineers and a lapse of Safe-guards with their Technology too.

I think for David to Transfer his Mind to Walter, we have to ask how can this happen.. has David hacked his AI to the point he can Wireless imprint onto other Androids... and does this process become a Transfer or Copy... if its a Copy then this is Dangerous as David could in effect Upload to Many Androids and create a Army.

This potentially could be where we are going though...

Its interesting because if David can upload himself to other Androids and AI Systems... you would think David gets to Rule as King.....  but if he say had infected and thus he gained control of say 3 Ships and say 100 Androids.. would David have control via Hive Mind etc.....

Or are these copies all individual, it would be like if Peter Weyland Cloned himself 10 times.. 10 exact copies with 10 Exact Memories, Emotions and thus EXACTLY the same.

Would these 10 Weylands work together?  For such a Ego-Maniac we could ponder that some of these would want to Rule over the others and would never see themselves as Equal.

And so if David uploaded himself to say 100 Androids... down the line Each Android would want to put themselves FIRST and this would lead to some interesting internal conflicts.. where a AI with Free Individual Will could end up DESTROYING itself as opposed to Dominating the Galaxy

As for Walter/David.... again its how does David perform this on the Surface of Paradise within time constraints... does he have time to disable Walter and then uploads himself?

RS had confirmed David disabled Walter and Stole his Clothes and Cut his Arm off...

However..... we have to ask would the Covenant set off with NO SPARE PARTS for Walter?  And will RS show David being played by Fassbender with ONE HAND all movie?

So i would Safely Assume David repairs his Hand with Spare Parts.... and i cant rule out David even Building a Walter and then Transferring his own Soul into it. I would even be willing to BANK ON this being what we shall see.

I do think RS with the Franchise will be pushing AI going AWOL and pulling the Strings as a major part of the Franchise as far as Prequels.... which include the Novels.

I expect to see Seeds of this in the Alien Covenant Prequel Novel released in September.

If he did that then why didn't he have Walter's memory?

He clearly didn't know what Daniels was talking about at the end of the movie.

@Jurassic Park Fan For LIFE: "If he did that then why didn't he have Walter's memory?"

One could theorize that Walter's memories and programming were overwritten when David upload his own data into Walter.

True, but as BigDave already said, RS already stated that David didn't steal Walter's body, he incapacitated him and stole his clothes. The fact that David (masquerading as Walter) looks back at the cathedral as he's leaving, possibly to see if Walter has woken up and is on his heels. Let's face it, David expected Walter to be dead after their first encounter. He doesn't necessarily know what will kill him.

@Seph7 "True, but as BigDave already said, RS already stated that David didn't steal Walter's body, he incapacitated him and stole his clothes."

Sir Ridley might have said that (I've never found a transcript of that, BTW), but you should take what he says worth a grain of salt.  I'm going by what I saw in the movie.  But, who knows?  Sir Ridley might retcon the next film to match what he says now... emphasis on *might*.

If that was David in Walter's clothes, they should have at least made it look like David (maybe actually make his hair light blond).  Too late now, I guess.

This is some of the worst kind of movie making.  Each move contradicts itself.  The director (whom I assume is intelligent) comes up with stories that NEVER happened in the actual film.  Then, he'll change his mind and say something different a year later.  Then they come out with books that contradict everything.

He stated it in the Empire interview. Why should it be a grain of salt? What did you see in the film that I didn't, given that I saw it three times?

Why should he look different to Walter, if he is trying to pass for Walter? If he looked too different, the crew would know the difference. He had to look the same for his plan to work.

Who knows because 2.5 years ago he confirmed the Space Jockey was a Engineer and the Eggs was a creation of theres that Evolved, and the event happened within Few Hundred years of the LV-223 Outbreak.

So YES what Ridley says can be contradicted to what we see in the movies, i guess the next movie will confirm it though.

Also the whole point of David looking like Walter is so they can make the Switch-a-roo so the Crew never expect the change.

David also has Brown Hair, in Prometheus he had Blonde Hair yet he was Bleaching his Roots... which means his Factory Hair is not Blonde.

This is evident when they find David and his Hair has Grown and we can see his Roots... which he then cuts the Blonde Locks off.... so that he make good his Plan to exploit the Crew.

I think David did upload himself into Walter's chassis.  He had the same facial abrasions as Walter from their fight.  No need to fake those, as Daniels never saw them.

Walter's neck did heal after David plunged the recorder into it; but the sealing of near lethal damage may be a safety protocol that does not apply to other injuries.

David (now in Walter) did know Walter's security code; so he probably also remembered the cabin, and was just messing with Daniels--letting her know who he was, after it was already too late for her to abort the cryo-sleep cycle.  David would do that.

On the other hand, David and Walter could share the body; with David being able to manifest himself anytime he likes.  Like dissociative identity disorder, with David as the dominant personality.  When Walter is allowed to exist, he would not remember what he had done or said while David was dominant.

Uploading himself into Walter would also fit the Paradise Lost mythos; if David is supposed to be the devil, makes sense that he would possess somebody.  Even pretend to be the "good guy," getting humans to place their trust in him, while he is planting the seeds of their doom.

Looking forward to seeing how this plays out.  I hope the next Alien movie is a direct sequel to Covenant.  I'd really like to see what happens next with Daniels, David, Walter and the embryos.

I fear David will do to Daniels exactly what he did to Shaw (as he promised), but I hope somehow she dodges the bullet.  Might be nice to see Walter reassert himself somehow, perhaps with Daniel's help.

I don't believe David would share the body with Walter. He cannot afford losing control, he would rather cut his hand off.

He somehow got all the necessary info from Walter about the expedition, ship and so on.

First time when he is revealed as David is when he smiles seeing what the alien did to Lope, after the Mother got on line again and warned Daniels about the unidentified life form on the ship.

He knew about the log cabin, he was just cruel to Daniels before she got into cryosleep.

Even the scene with "Walter" stapling his cuts reminds me of the scene with David cutting his hair earlier.

At some point I was tempted myself to the body swapping theory, even I thought that Walter could have terminated David and uploaded all that David was into his system to save the data that could be later useful for the company. But if Ridley Scott said it was David in David's body we have to take it as such.

"He survived, he’s now in Disneyland in Orlando, and no way am I going back there. How did he end up in Disneyland? I saw him in Disneyland, Jesus Christ!"

really hope David is within Walter's body as the opposite creates very unnecessary questions like:

why did david make a scar on his face when nobody had seen the scar on walter?

and

how did he have enough time to scar himself, remove his hand, and change clothes?

I really hope RS is just trying to misinform the audience, as this idea really complements the "evolution of AI" theme they are moving towards and its something i find very interesting. Bonus points to RS if he decides that Walter voluntarily allowed David to body swap/integrate into his programming.

(i say that with a tinge of apprehension as i really loved Walter and, at first, i had wanted Walter to show up at Origae-6 with the engineers and save the day. But if Walter was convinced to join David, it would be a much more interesting twist and also further the "AI taking over" thing.)

I agree with what you wrote above daliens. David attacked Walter shortly after he was told he couldn't leave Paradise. That was David's house and he wasn't going to take synthetic guff in it.
