just proves the point that even though it is a badly told story, fox will make money. imagine how well they would do if they just left RS to do what he wanted with this saga

I really think there is a new dynamic in town now with pirated movies or I just finally happened to stumble onto it. I can watch Covenant right now on my tablet and have been able to since the second weekend of box office release. My buddy skipped the theater to watch it on his couch so I imagine China may do the same. Of course this movie to me deserves a silver screen viewing for a fan even though I don't like the film. With ticket prices being through the roof here in the USA the best bet is to just wait and buy on Blu-ray, dvd. I think you have to make a really good film to hit that special sauce where "word of mouth that's positive" moves butts to the theatre.

These numbers arent looking too bad, are they?
I would be glad if A:C at least would break even.

Btw, where did the article on the mainpage about 'why A:C flopped' go?

Thanks for the update Ati!

I'm doing my bit in a small way. I have gone to the cinema once a week since the release. Four times now, if COVENANT is still in UK theatres next week I will go again!

I pre-ordered the novelisations, Official Collectors Edition, The Art and Making of A;C and will be purchasing other merchandise.

I want Ridley to continue, but I WANT FOX TO STOP MEDDLING AND ALLOW RIDLEY TO CONTINUE WITH HIS ORIGINAL VISION, GIVE HIM THE BUDGET IT DESERVES AND ALLOW A DECENT RUNTIME.

2 hours runtime was not enough for PROMETHEUS, nor COVENANT. Ridley has allowed the suits to convince him to change direction twice now, they have him questioning his own vision. Perhaps this time they will realise THEY WERE WRONG!!

totaaaly agree lone, theyv changed things which makes me think why didn't hill and giler just do the film themselves if they were going to interfere so much anyway. ridley needs to be given full control before its too late and we end up with a saga that doesn't do the franchise any justice

Lone

MemberPraetorianJun-03-2017 5:47 AM

It has nothing to do with Hill and Giler ali. It's the current crop of suits at Fox!

Ridley said in a recent interview that their names are only there as producers because of contractual reasons. They had no input whatsoever with Prometheus nor A:C.

I was under the impression that the were the fox suits. well regardless of who is interfering they need to stay out and let RS do what he does best.

the detail of the motes seems to be a bit off. im imagining that each individual mote is able to produce an egg. when we see the motes grouping together in AC as described here, wouldn't it stand to reason more eggs would have been laid? or am I just being too picky lol

Looking how the Franchise has fared since after Alien 3 (inc AVP movies) it would seem most of the movies make 195% more in other markets than Domestic.

Which could hint at a Extra $25M but then the Domestic and other Markets have not closed yet and China and few places have yet to get the movie...

So i think the movie will make back 200% of its Budget but it will still go down as a disappointment.. Sadly

I think it will Gross about $200-225M.. Hopefully it does better.

I would think FOX would have hoped to had made $300M+ though, but i think Sequel has been given the Go Ahead Regardless... Sadly how this movie does may affect how much Budget FOX are willing to invest... I hope this does not do another AVPR.... where FOX feel the first movie did not go down to well and so reduced the Budget for the Sequel.

But then AC has a reduced Budget compared to Prometheus and so i feel FOX simply dont care so much for this Franchise as with Inflation AC Budget was like $45M less than Prometheus. ($33M plus Inflation) well $130M 2011 Inflated ($142M 2016).

If Alien Awakening has a Budget of $80M and will shoot in 12-18 Months thats not going to be looking good...

@BigDave I think if they again get actors that are relative unknowns (even if they have to ditch Fassbender) then they could EASILY meet a budget like that. Part of what made Alien perfect for 1979 was the cast. Actors are EASY to come by. As long as the script is good, most actors are capable of handling it (except for Logan michael michelle Greeny-man). The budget is mostly occupied by actor/staff salaries.

The way it's tumbling...I mean it's tracking close to Power Rangers did and Power Rangers was PG-13.  So maybe 85 million.  So 67 million by the end of the Weekend.  Let's be optimistic and say it hits 85 million.  China and Japan are going to have to be huge.  So lets be really optimistic and say the rest of it's international run add China and Japan 80 million, I think it will most likely be 50 to 60.  180 million international and 85 million domestic.  Depending if it's a 2 or 2.5 multiplier on breaking even that's barely breaking even or a slight loss after it's theater run. Add VOD and Blu-ray and it should have a small profit.  Low end $220 worldwide, Being very Optimistic $260 million.  Add Blu-ray and VOD and it should turn a slight profit.

Capt Torgo

MemberFacehuggerJun-03-2017 11:44 AM

Right Jafo. It seems like the budget is 97 million plus at least 35 million marketing/distribution. So roughly 135 million needs about 270 million there abouts to break even. I have no clue, this is just what I gathered from other sites, etc. It's interesting stuff however I bought one ticket and only one as Sir Ridley is not scratching my itch more like he's poison oak; but that's just me. Don't think anybody wants this to fail but it sure tells me that "word of mouth is not too kind" for this film. Maybe Japan and China will help move the needle we'll see. I'm not sure giving Ridley more cash and a long leash is gonna deliver the goods as my opinion he is gonna do his "David Show" spouting philosophy and to hell with everything else. Although I'm sure it will look and sound mint like this current one. Big Dave wish you could call fox or ridley and talk some sense into them. Strange Days in the franchise, hope there is light at the end of the tunnel

Absolutely disgraceful. Any Blumhouse cheapie makes 200 domestically with no fanbase and with a minuimum of advertising. It seems now the Alien brand will be more likely to turn off the audience rather than attract it, all thanks to Ridley Scott's vanity. I can see 20th Century Fox scrambling to resuscitate the franchise maybe in another 5 years labeling the next installment "A new vision" or "A new beginning"...

Alien and subsequent sequels, including AC, are not necessarily your standard multiplex fair. Let us not forget that the 'long lasting nature' of this franchise to inspire and create a very loyal following is one based on a determination not to be all to everyone. If these films were intent on pleasing everyone, then Marvel all the way. They are more than this and this is what keeps us hooked and returning to this Alien universe again and again. Fox will make money in DVD, Blu-Ray, legal download and 4K Blu-ray, plus the books and various NECA merchandise - it is a very healthy market - Fox would not give this up, therefore Alien: Awakening, I would say, will very much happen. The original Alien film is, historically, the most analysed - academically - in university circles on a philosophical level. AC and Prometheus before it is no different. This philosophical market maybe a niche, but as this forum proves the Alien fanbase is a many splintered thing - Fox know this! It will run and run.

I do feel that FOX will now think the Franchise needs to be about Ripleys Story...  they felt Shaw and her agenda to discover our makers while being religious and the whole Engineers connected to religion and Ancient Mythos was something that Fans did not like...

They thought in hindsight to bring the Alien back into it, but keep Fassbender as RS liked him and his David Character.

i now fear they will look at the other Element that made the Franchise apart from the Alien... this is Ripley and they may even decide to take out and tone down the David Android role..

i fear Alien Awakening will be change to be a Dream of Ripley and then bring in a Young Ripley... narrated by a older Ripley in the future and set up a Alien 5 set 25 years after Aliens..

You heard it here first lol

What do i mean?  I expect the end of Alien Awakening to flash forwards to 25-30 years after the events of Aliens with Ripley then waking up and having a Nightmare... and Hicks say.. another Dream Ripley... these seem to happen every 7-10 years... Ripley goes... this one i was younger i was a Child...

Hicks they are just dreams, we Nuked LV-426 there are not more Xenomorphs.... Then Ripley sugest... but what if there are.. My dreams always seems to show the Weyland-Yutani Company and other Companies want to take advantage of the Alien.

Hicks is like but we wiped it out 25-30 years ago...

Ripley says... but what about who created it?  And if the company knows...

Then we get to see a Alien 5 where her Dreams become a reality and they some 100 years after Covenant, recover the Juggernaught that David had taken to Paradise..

Que Blomkamps Alien but re-written a bit...

Trust me i would not think this would be out of the Question..

Oh Dear... HOPE I HAVE NOT GIVEN THEM THE IDEA ;)

BK1 I'll take your approach that fox and the franchise will be fine. And like Starlogger says " if they get a good script AND stick to the damn thing" it can work with a hungry "grounded" director + any decent actors. Although I think Logan Marshall nailed it , he was just given a shit character. Poor Billy crudup never had a chance with his character dialog but who turns down a paycheck. Waterston, have not seen enough of her work but I bet she could do it. A great follow-up is there it just can not be pretentious and piss off the public, yet still be innovative but simple. Maybe we are all wrong and no R movie besides "get out" is gonna win at box office. Things will work out its just that ridley might not be at the helm. BigDave I think Ripley is a goose that is beyond cooked although I'd pay to see her fighting Xenomorphs in a wheelchair

joylitt

MemberNeomorphJun-03-2017 5:25 PM

BigDave Oh no, let's please not mix Ripley with all the stupid who made them question, a movie does not need to exist just to connect the dots or to try to fix the mistakes of past installments.

Big Dave & Capt Torgo : Big Dave I think you are spot on with the 'Dream' element cue at the end of Aliens. I, also, thought that this is the only way for Fox to push aside Alien 3 and Resurrection and follow through with a Ripley line. Personally, I agree with Capt Torgo that 'Ripley is a goose', as the Alien franchise potential, ironically if we take into account the existence of Prometheus and AC now, points to AI (David, Ash and Bishop) and the Lovecraftian Engineers and how can we forget the Hammerpeads, the Deacon, Neomorphs and, ultimately, the Xeno. The latter, I feel, has a lot of exciting potential visually and narratively.

I will completely turn my back on this saga if she is brought back, yet again!!

Sorry but the one who is beyond overcooked is Ridley Scott. He got his chance to have a masterpiece and he blew it for the second time. And on top of that he is blocking the franchise from going forward in more interesting directions.

Lone

MemberPraetorianJun-04-2017 4:04 AM

With all respect joylitt, I don't think you can just blame Ridley.

Bottom line, it's the suits at FOX who are in control. They are the ones who made him dial back on the Alien elements in Prometheus, and then add them, to the detriment of the Prometheus elements, in Covenant.

Personally, I don't know why Ridley cow-tows to them, he doesn't need the money and they are effectively ruining his reputation!

The fanbase is splintering off in even more directions. It's time for FOX to sit up and take notice because they are at risk of losing us all!

Alien will always be a masterpiece. Any subsequent films function a bit like - to paraphrase the artist Robert Motherwell - once you have created a seminal piece of art anything that follows is simply a process of wanting to recapture or revisit that moment again and again. Thus, all works that follow are in the shadow of said great work. If this premise is taken into account, then, any Alien themed film Scott produces and directs will be shadow pieces that cannot capture the Geist of Alien. It would be foolish to think they can.

BK1

MemberOvomorphJun-04-2017 9:54 AM

Joylitt - you are probably right with the AI being a turn-off for mass multiplex audiences. AC, like Prometheus, then, is on an AI journey, a kind of Stephen Hawking's warning visualised, maybe? It is important for Scott to complete this vision and then we can judge these various acts leading up to Alien. Ash let Kane in and David let the pathogen do its stuff. These pesky meddling AIs.
