Alien Covenant: WTF? (Spoilers!)

#1.  Why even cast James Franco, he didn't even get to do anything? Pointless.

#2. If David loved Shaw, why did he kill her?  Not only kill her, but terribly multilate her?  He's obviously f**ked in the head.  But why? Is it a glitch in his programming?

#3.  I read on here before seeing the movie that the origin of the black goo would be explained.  Sorry if I missed it just now in the theater, (I literally just exited it 5 mins ago), but I don't recall that bing explained.  I remember David saying something about an egg and a fly/bug, and he was holding up the green vial things we saw in Prometheus but that's it.

#4.  How did the Xeno burst out of Billy Crudup (sorry, forgot his forgettable character's name) looking like that? (and so quickly!  The poor b**tard didn't even get to have his last supper of noodles!)  I thought that was dumb.  So basically between this and Alien it gets downgraded?  As in appearance and no arms or legs?  I mean, COME ON!

#5. Why was David crying all the time?  Did he feel remorse over everything he had done?  Because he is clearly mad (I think) but then again a true Psychopath doesn't feel remorse.  Ask any psychologist.

I have many more issues but this is just right off my head as I am driving home from the theater (don't panic, friends, I am not the one driving!  Lol).  I just want to kick off a discussion addressing my points and adding your own if you please.  Thanks!

P.S.  I preferred Prometheus and Alien 1,2, & 3 to this.  I haven't quite decided how I really feel about it but yet I need time I digest it over a beer and good company this evening, but I am a little disappointed.  I didn't hate it though.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.  I watched Androids blow and finger each other's flutes.

Another thing that bugged me is the fact that he made a tombstone for Shaw despite murdering her. Was he certain a ship would come?

1. I agree unfortunately. I love Franco and think that it is awesome that he was in an Alien movie, but it was veey pointless. Some of the people I talked to (uncluding friend who saw it with me) didn't know who was in it, so they saw Franco and it kind of led to a rough start. Almost same with McBride, but he was fantastic so it worked. And he actualy had a role. Not just dead body/ipad guy.

2. I really hope we get some insight on this in a book sequel/prequel or the film sequel. "The Crossing," prologue made it seem like they were good friends. I belive that he did love her, but boy oh boy he just decided to rip her apart. She didn't even get a cool send off.

3. I literally am the same as you. I remember the bug talk, but didn't retain any information. The origin of the goo was not explained, the goo itself was expanded upon a bit by the bombing of the Engineers, but that's it.

4. The bursting in this movie was weird. I loved the violent gory ways it happened, but everything was basically just a miniature of itself. Execpt for the mouth burster. That was like the snake from Prometheus I think. I tihnk the miniburster from Crudup (Captain Oram) will get cooler to me as it goes, but it was defnitely really weird. Cool shot with David standing above it and what not.

5. Not totally sure, but I thought it worked well for the film and David's state at this point in his arc. He seems tortured by what he wants, doesn't want, has done, is doing, and will do. He can't escape that torture because of his end goal. He belives it is the best for the universe, but it's tough.

1. Who knows how they figure out casting and what is really the big deal. It's basically a cameo. Happens all the time.

2.David is an AI bent on the destruction of humans. He did love her compassion but again she is just a means to an end. Her life for his greater plan. He kept her picture as a memory but he needed her for his experiments apparently.

3. Black goo still vague. A bit more clearer. Probably a plot hole too big from Prometheus so they did the best they could.

4. He was infected by the facehugger. It attached itself to him then the guy cut it off but apparently it still put the alien stuff inside him. Wasn't to fond of that either. I don't remember all the names so I'm assuming that's the part. Why did the acid blood not eat through his face?

*didnt you see it's arms and legs? It basically stood up and spread its arms? I also think they had a little fun with that as well.

5. David is not human. He is an android gone mad, sadistic, evil, etc... Although he is pretty close, if not, sentient at this point. I think that's the correct word.

hope that helps. That's all I got right now.

he probably gave her a tombstone out of respect. Remember he said she showed compassion like no other. Remember he layed a flower on her headstone, picture, his little shrine on the desk, etc...

All good points.  I am looking forward to watching it again frankly.  There were lots of positives but I really don't get the chestburster on this one.  It would have made more sense to stick with the neomorphs etc.  Seems like they wanted to go full ALIEN on it.

Thank you for starting this thread. There is so much wrong with this movie and you hit it right on the head. What the f#@k indeed. Just kill the franchise for awhile now please. I was super excited for this movie and it was completely and utterly disappointing.

@dr honestly the only thing that he has a point on is the black goo. Nitpicking about Franco? Seriously, who really cares. The other stuff is pretty much explained. I mean if you have a closed mind it won't matter what anyone says apparently.

@Spatterpunk -  You didn't understand me.  I didn't mean the he guy who got acid on his face I meant Billy Crudup's character that got facehugged in David's egg room.  Also, I meant the fact that in the original Alien (the very first chestburster seen on screen) it had no arms or legs (or at least no arms).  This has been documented very well throughout all the documentaries over the years.  The one in AC was fully formed and like others have said here, a minature.  It was ridiculous.  So David perfects the perfect organism and then somewhere between AC and Alien it gets downgraded?  Lol.  There goes logic flying out of the window, wave goodbye everyone!

As for David killing Shaw... I don't recall anything from the movie specifically saying that David killed her. Walter confronted him with the fact that he lied about Shaw dying before they got there. But David didn't confess to killing her, he just acknowledged that she didn't die the way he first told them.

We obviously see that he did an autopsy on her, or perhaps did some experimenting with her corpse. But is it a certainty that he killed her, or sacrificed her?

Perhaps she became infected accidentally, or something else happened to her first.

i watched a:c several days ago.

the night before i watched avp.

if we exclude canon. we say they are both stand alone movies then they both gave me the same feeling.

for me, a:c is just another alien movie, just a decent enough film for the casual fan. nothing more.

yes its beautiful to look at but were in an age where you can do that for any film if you have the $$$$

it could of and should of been so different.

however it could still of been salvaged if thet gave us some reveals or some engineer input or details. just something more than we got.

they told us every interview its the scariest yet.

oh wow its scary! shame it wasnt.

i smiled more times than i jumped (0) probably due to how it looked rather than anything else.

all that money wasted on those sets for a few seconds. the engineer ship, corridors, landers etc.. but everything was so rushed and ignored.

the hall of heads.

not mentioned.

no one was interested in the city or mentioned it.

oh thats enough for now

Take This.... This is the blood of our lord

@cmutt true. Although when he was on top of Daniels she said something like what did you do to her or something and he said same thing I'm going to do to you. Correct me if I'm wrong.

So im just going on that he experimented on her but it could of been after she died.

@p got you. Remember these aren't the same xeno as in the original yet. So that could be why. The story hasn't gotten that far yet.

@sherris   I agree completely, what it comes down to is another wasted opportunity.

I bought the Prometheus DVD.  Mainly due to the imagery and landscape.  I won't buy Covenant.  It would be like buying a Chucky movie, once u see it, it is done.  There is no depth to rethink.

#1.  Ridley asked him if he wanted a role in his Alien movie, and then said its only a small one (3 Scenes) plus Prologue and Franco was just like Hell Yeah count me in.. he did not mind it was a small role he was just happy to be involved.

#2. Covered this in this Thread http://www.alien-covenant.com/topic/44894  It would appear David started to get feelings for Shaw, and decided to take it further, but she rejected him and also would have been quiet frightened... i would assume this went downhill after this point and David who felt rejected by Mankind and only respected and treated the way he wanted by Shaw... but now feels she Rejected him and must have really effected him.

#3. Its not really explained much, he just says that the Pathogen breaks down and destroys DNA but it can in certain circumstances be used to create and that he had witnessed how it effected some Life-forms that would then pass the Parasitic Pathegen on and he continued to experiment.

#4 Ultimately they had a Slow Burn build up, from the Start to when David took them to the Cathedral and as they had to quickly cover some Prometheus things, and Davids Gone Mad Personality and Agenda... and knowing they had a Final Scene set up.... within the Time Restrains of the Plot they had to Speed up the Process so they can let the time the Crew stayed on Paradise to when they get to the ship flow well, without being broken up by having to explain what they are doing while waiting 12 hours plus for the Chest Busters.

#5. He has become Emotionally unstable, and there is never No One Size Fits all Psychological Problems...  Many people can have multiple ones... i have known a few people with Mental Health Issues and that have Bi-Polar but this triggers bouts of crying and despair... to bouts of being happy and jolly and odd, to then other times being very wicked manipulative and some Psychopathic traits... like they have 2-3 Personalities triggered by their current Environment/Emotional State

The Change in Xenomorph as far as the Chest Buster was a odd Choice, if they intended to show this Evolves into the Xenomorph, i agree with that.

Evidence seems to show that Davids Experiment has some improvements over the Xenomorph... which could lead to speculation that he had Evolved/Re-created it

But Ridleys comments seem to confirm he creates it and eventually this would evolve to Alien Derelict Eggs.
