Just stumbled across the best theory I've heard yet on David's reasoning for the bombardment. It is only 1 minute:45 seconds long and it does not require finding out something terrible about the engineers or Shaw dying necessarily.
If you want to skip the video, the short of it is embodied in the old saying "get them before they get you". Of course, the video makes this point more eloquently but that is essentially the jist.
Seems to make a good bit of sense. Apologies if this has already been covered.

Interesting... but i cant see David just want to do this because he could...
We dont know if Davids Agenda was this from the start, and he lies to Shaw, it will be interesting to see if David really did grow fond of Shaw and then what causes the changes.. or if David all along had the game plan to lead Shaw to put him back together and then trust him to go into Cryo-sleep
I think David has been deceptive in the Crossing Prologue when he tells Shaw he is not sure how long the journey will take..
I think Weyland Prologue had a big effect on David, as we will see David is treated as a Tool, a Robot yet he is superior to Mankind in every way... yet he has no Soul
Weyland will be driven by the Gods, in that what makes Gods truly Gods is that they have created their own life, and they have left this creation as a Legacy... something that the Engineers had done with us.
David will learn the tales of Gods, and how Gods are Creators and this makes them superior.... as Weyland has created then he feels he too is superior and equal to the Gods... HOWEVER.. the other thing David learns about Gods and Creation is these Gods (across many religions and cultures) are not only beings who create Life, but they possess many other powers and miracles and so their power is only in their knowledge and tools of how they create such things.
The Engineers are Mortal after-all, and its only their Genetic Advancements and ability to create life and live longer than Mankind that makes them Superior and with the Engineers/Gods secrets and knowledge and Technology, then Weyland and Mankind would eventually be able to Advance themselves too, eventually with the Engineers Power, Mankind could over come many things (or so Weyland hoped) and with their Technology then WE (Mankind) would be the Gods now.
There is ONE KEY element in the tale of Gods/Creation that is the defining theme for a GOD, that Weyland could never achieve despite thinking meeting his own creators he could... and one thing that is revealed the Engineers are not...
That is IMMORTAL...
This is what separates David from Mankind and Engineers, David is in a way Immortal, David is superior to Humans and Engineers as far as potential intellect the Engineers only advantage over David is their Technology and there Genetics as far as Brute Strength.
David will realize the Engineers eventually saw Mankind as a Flawed in-perfect creation, one with many flaws... But David will also realize the Engineers are the same to a degree.
David will then realize that the only thing that makes these Engineers Godlike is that they may be taller and a bit stronger than David, but potentially David can live longer, and the only things thus that really make the Engineers GODS.... are their Technology and Knowledge and that they have used this to Create Life.
Should David discover and obtain all the Technology and Knowledge of the Engineers and create his own Life, he would as Weyland puts it with himself (for creating David)... well if David can create his own Life, then David would be as a GOD...
Only the True Tales of GODS, depict powerful creators... who are IMMORTAL... this is something the Engineers actually are not.
David plus Engineers Technology and Knowledge and then Creating life himself... would truly make David more GODLIKE than the Engineers could ever be..
This i feel is behind Davids Agenda....
But there are a few things that Prevent David from Achieving this GOAL..... Shaw and her Agenda... and the Engineers... David can not guarantee that the Engineers would take Shaw and David with open Arms... there is the chance their reception will be met with the same way the Engineer did in Prometheus.
Taking out the Engineers, allows David to gain their Technology and Knowledge and attempt to become his own GOD

I still think these are only one of maybe 2 species of engineers and something more is going on beyond davids insanity.
Got my ticket for 12th may at 12:15 imax :) hopefully some answers but no doubt many questions.
ohh nice you get a free alien covenant poster for watching the film before the 14th if you prebook :)
S1m0n How are you able to see it so early? How can I search for this? thanks!
I don't disagree with any of your points as it is true there is still much to be explored re: what he learns about the engineers or whether he had any true emotions for Shaw.
I will say I can't escape the idea that if David (through whatever type of transformative event) becomes a truly sentient creature, he then acquires one of the core tenets of humanity (or in this case, the humanoid races).
In this case I don't think it would be David so much doing the attack just because he could. My come away from the theory in the video is that David becomes just like all other humanoid creatures (as portrayed in these films). He gains an inflated sense of self and conquers who he perceives to be an enemy/threat. The idea that David would adopt these hostile tenets of human civilization in finding his own humanity is a deep and powerful concept. And while this idea could easily incorporate a catalyst of him learning something terrible about the engineers or trauma from Shaw's death, it can stand on it's own without those as prerequisites. Am I saying this is the story we will end up getting? No. But I do find it to be a very smart idea with a lot of potential.
But yes, as we always say here, we will have to wait and see.
im from uk so release is 12th may. i could go see it tomorrow as my cinema has a few preview seats left.
Perhaps when Shaw was putting David back together. David purposely guided her into connecting him back without the original directives. "Red to red, green to green". This set him free to do as he pleased. This includes harming humans as well.
Is there an agenda the mods are not telling us about? ;)
